Pixellated circle.

Appl Opt

Published: September 2018

For applications in optical systems it is often necessary to represent a circular aperture in a pixellated form. An objective parameter is introduced that is a measure of how well an approximate circle can be generated from a small array of square pixels. Both filled circles (disks) and rings are considered. Arrays with a width given by an even number of pixels can also be used to generate quadrants of a circle. Rings with outer and inner profiles given by optimum circles or quadrants can be summed to fill a complete circle or quadrant.

Automatic Optical Path Alignment Method for Optical Biological Microscope.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Machine Vision and Intelligent Control, Wuzhou University, Wuzhou 543000, China.

A high-quality optical path alignment is essential for achieving superior image quality in optical biological microscope (OBM) systems. The traditional automatic alignment methods for OBMs rely heavily on complex masker-detection techniques. This paper introduces an innovative, image-sensor-based optical path alignment approach designed for low-power objective (specifically 4×) automatic OBMs.

Application of microscopic smartphone attachment for remote preoperative lab testing.

Front Digit Health

November 2024

Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, United States.

Introduction: Current preoperative exam guidelines utilize extensive lab tests, including blood tests and urine analysis, which are crucial for assessing surgical readiness. However, logistical challenges, especially for patients traveling long distances for high-quality medical care, create significant delays and burdens. This study aims to address these challenges by applying a previously developed point-of-care (POC) device system to perform accurate and rapid lab tests.

Purpose: To assess repeatability of macular inner choroid flow deficit percentage (ICFD%) in intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) and controls employing various post-processing approaches.

Methods: Cross-sectional, observational study. We included (1) 22 iAMD and 24 control eyes, with (2) age >50 years, (3) visual acuity >20/32, and (4) no additional ocular and systemic confounders.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to confirm the reliability of measuring choriocapillaris flow deficit (CCFD) within a specific macular grid and to track these measurements over time.
  • Researchers utilized advanced imaging technology to gather data, excluding certain areas in the scans to accurately calculate CCFD percentages in both normal eyes and those with eye conditions.
  • The findings showed that the methodology is effective for monitoring changes in CCFD, particularly in cases where drusen (eye abnormalities) resolved, demonstrating the practicality of the grid strategy for longitudinal studies.
