The ladar scene projector is a key device in the hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation system. Ladar scene modeling is a fundamental work of developing a ladar scene projector. A modeling method based on physically based rendering technology and OpenGL is proposed in this paper. This modeling method can quickly generate delay, amplitude, and pulse width data for all return signals in a large-array-scale ladar scene. A 100×100-array-sized ladar scene model with a distance range of 0-3 km is simulated. The average data generation time is only 5.31 ms. Distance resolution is 1.5 m, and the peak-valley error is less than 0.15 m. This method achieves efficient modeling and fast hardware update rates, which greatly improves the real-time performance of the ladar scene projector. It has strong practicality and can be directly applied in the HWIL simulation system.

This work introduces a super-resolution (SR) algorithm for range images on the basis of self-guided joint filtering (SGJF), adding the range information of the range image as a coefficient of the filter to reduce the influence of the intensity image texture on the super-resolved image. A range image SR recognition system is constructed to study the effect of four SR algorithms including the SGJF algorithm on the recognition of the laser radar (ladar) range image. The effects of different model library sizes, SR algorithms, SR factors and noise conditions on the recognition are tested via experiments.

We demonstrate and examine alternative sampling and post-detection processing schemes where recorded measurements are made in alternative bases that are intended to reduce system power consumption and laser emissions. A prototype of such a sensor having the capability to generate arbitrary illumination beam patterns rather than spot, line scanning, or flash techniques is described along with computational imaging algorithms to reduce speckle and identify scene objects in a low-dimensional compressed basis rather than in the pixel basis.

In a range gated system, a reflected laser pulse returned from the target scene contains key information for range reconstruction, which directly affects the system performance. Therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics and effects of the target reflection factor.

A model based on the ladar range equation is developed to calculate the profile of the ladar return signal. The influences of both the atmosphere and the target's surface properties are considered.
