A 35 nV/√Hz Analog Front-End Circuit with Adjustable Bandwidth and Gain in UMC 40 nm CMOS for Biopotential Signal Acquisition.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Discipline Laboratory of Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Technology, School of Microelectronics, Xidian University, Xi'an 710071, China.

This paper presents a 35 nV/√Hz analog front-end (AFE) circuitdesigned in the UMC 40 nm CMOS technology for the acquisition of biopotential signal. The proposed AFE consists of a capacitive-coupled instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) and a combination of a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and a low-pass filter (LPF). The CCIA includes a DC servo loop (DSL) to eliminate electrode DC offset (EDO) and a ripple rejection loop (RRL) with self-zeroing technology to suppress high-frequency ripples caused by the chopper.

False Alarms in Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillators-A Relevant Issue or an Insignificant Observation.

J Clin Med

December 2024

Department of Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine, Deutsches Herzzentrum der Charité (DHZC), Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Augustenburger Platz 1, 13353 Berlin, Germany.

The wearable cardioverter defibrillator (WCD) has emerged as a valuable tool used for temporary protection from sudden cardiac death. However, since the WCD uses surface electrodes to detect arrhythmias, it is susceptible to inappropriate detection. Although shock conversion rates for the WCD are reported to be high for detected events, its efficacy in clinical practice tends to be degraded by patient noncompliance.

Wearable non-invasive neuroprosthesis for targeted sensory restoration in neuropathy.

Nat Commun

Neuroengineering Laboratory, Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Peripheral neuropathy (PN), the most common complication of diabetes, leads to sensory loss and associated health issues as pain and increased fall risk. However, present treatments do not counteract sensory loss, but only partially manage its consequences. Electrical neural stimulation holds promise to restore sensations, but its efficacy and benefits in PN damaged nerves are yet unknown.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS), a proven treatment for movement disorders, also holds promise for the treatment of psychiatric and cognitive conditions. However, for DBS to be clinically effective, it may require DBS technology that can alter or trigger stimulation in response to changes in biomarkers sensed from the patient's brain. A growing body of evidence suggests that such adaptive DBS is feasible, it might achieve clinical effects that are not possible with standard continuous DBS and that some of the best biomarkers are signals from the cerebral cortex.

Epidemic infections and spreading antibiotic resistance require diagnostic tests that can be rapidly adopted. To reduce the usually time-consuming adaptation of molecular diagnostic tests to changing targets, we propose the novel approach of a repurposable sensing electrode functionalization with a universal, target-independent oligonucleotide probe. In the liquid phase covering the electrode, the target sequence is amplified by MD LAMP (mediator-displacement loop-mediated isothermal amplification) releasing a generic methylene blue-labeled mediator, which specifically hybridizes to the solid-phase probe.
