The effect of anterior disc displacement with polycystic ovarian syndrome on adolescent condylar bone remodeling.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Department of Oral Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, College of Stomatology, National Center for Stomatology, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shanghai Research Institute of Stomatology, 639 Zhizaoju Road, Shanghai, 200011, China.

Background: Adolescent females have a high prevalence of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement (ADD), which can lead to condylar resorption and dentofacial deformity. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that disrupts bone metabolism. However, the effects of PCOS on bone remodeling especially after disc repositioning (DR) surgery are not well understood.

Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is characterized by infiltration with IgG4-producing plasma cells in different organs and the elevation of serum IgG4. We present a patient with polycystic kidney disease in long-term follow-up who developed bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement and presumed IgG4-related choroidopathy at different time points. A 45-year-old woman developed bilateral upper eyelid swelling.

Functions of TRPs in retinal tissue in physiological and pathological conditions.

Front Mol Neurosci

September 2024

Laboratory Neurobiology of the Retina, Department of Neurobiology and Program of Biomedical Sciences, Biology Institute, Fluminense Federal University Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) constitutes a family of channels subdivided into seven subfamilies: Ankyrin (TRPA), Canonical (TRPC), Melastatin (TRPM), Mucolipin (TRPML), no-mechano-potential C (TRPN), Polycystic (TRPP), and Vanilloid (TRPV). Although they are structurally similar to one another, the peculiarities of each subfamily are key to the response to stimuli and the signaling pathway that each one triggers. TRPs are non-selective cation channels, most of which are permeable to Ca, which is a well-established second messenger that modulates several intracellular signaling pathways and is involved in physiological and pathological conditions in various cell types.

Article Synopsis
  • Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is produced in different stages of fetal development and plays a key role in reproductive health by regulating ovarian functions and serving as a marker of ovarian reserve.
  • Its importance extends to the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome and the management of assisted reproductive technologies.
  • Additionally, AMH has potential applications in oncology, with research investigating its role in cancer treatments and its involvement in neuroprotection, learning, and memory-related processes.

Acetate attenuates hypothalamic pyroptosis in experimentally induced polycystic ovarian syndrome.

BMC Res Notes

September 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, 360101, Nigeria.

This study hypothesized that SCFA, acetate impacts positively on hypothalamic pyroptosis and its related abnormalities in experimentally induced PCOS rat model, possibly through NrF2/HIF1-α modulation. Eight-week-old female Wister rats were divided into groups (n = 5), namely control, PCOS, acetate and PCOS + acetate groups. Induction of PCOS was performed by administering 1 mg/kg body weight of letrozole for 21 days.
