The PERFORMANCE II Trial: A Prospective Multicenter Investigation of a Novel Carotid Stent System.

JACC Cardiovasc Interv

December 2024

Department for Angiology, Brandenburg Medical School Theodor Fontane, Campus Clinic Brandenburg, Center for Internal Medicine I, Berlin, Germany; Department of Angiology, Sankt-Gertrauden-Krankenhaus, Berlin, Germany.

Background: Several randomized clinical trials have shown that the composite endpoint of death, stroke, and myocardial infarction (MI) is equivalent between carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy. However, the risk of minor stroke has been consistently higher with carotid artery stenting.

Objectives: The authors sought to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a novel carotid stent system comprised of a stent, an adjustable integrated embolic filter and a postdilation balloon, in patients at elevated risk for adverse events from carotid endarterectomy.

Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a transformative tool in various industries, driving advancements in key tasks like classification, regression, and clustering. In the field of chemical engineering, particularly in the creation of biomedical devices, personalization is essential for ensuring successful patient recovery and rehabilitation. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a material with promising potential for applications like tissue engineering, orthopedic implants, drug delivery systems, and cardiovascular stents due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability.

New treatments for glaucoma.

Curr Opin Ophthalmol

January 2025

New York Eye Surgery Center, New York City, New York, USA.

Purpose Of Review: This review highlights new Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved glaucoma treatments to familiarize providers with immediately available options.

Recent Findings: New FDA-approved treatments include the bimatoprost implant, travoprost implant, direct selective laser trabeculoplasty (DSLT), and ocular pressure adjusting pump. The bimatoprost implant is approved for a single administration with effects lasting for about 1 year, as opposed to the nearly 3-year effect for the travoprost implant.

Background: Few data are available on polymer-free drug-eluting stents in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Aims: We aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of a polymer-free amphilimus-eluting stent (AES), using a reservoir-based technology for drug delivery, compared with a biodegradable-polymer everolimus-eluting stent (EES).

Methods: This was a randomised, investigator-initiated, assessor-blind, non-inferiority trial conducted at 14 hospitals in Italy (ClinicalTrials.

The guide extension-facilitated ostial stenting (GEST) technique uses a guide extension catheter (GEC) to improve stent delivery during primary coronary angioplasty (PCI). GECs are used for stent delivery into the coronary arteries of patients with difficult anatomy due to tortuosity, calcification, or chronic total occlusion (CTO) vessels. Stent and balloon placement has become challenging in patients with increasing lesion complexity due to tortuosity, vessel morphology, length of the lesion, and respiratory movements.
