Lateralized behaviours are widespread among the animals, including insects with their miniature brains, perhaps being a way of maximising neural capacity (reviewed in [1,2]). However, evidence for functional asymmetries in the neural circuitry itself is scarce. Here, using bilateral simultaneous recordings from the ex vivo nervous system of desert locusts, we show that the neural control of their forelimbs is asymmetric. This asymmetry was retained throughout the experimental period and either with or without the suboesophageal ganglion (SOG). These findings provide evidence for hard-wired neural sidedness and contribute to our understanding of the lateralization observed in in-vivo motor behaviours.

The aim of this work is to incorporate lanthanide-cored upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) into the surface of microengineered biomedical implants to create a spatially controlled and optically releasable model drug delivery device in an integrated fashion. Our approach enables silicone-based microelectrocorticography (ECoG) implants holding platinum/iridium recording sites to serve as a stable host of UCNPs. Nanoparticles excitable in the near-infrared (lower energy) regime and emitting visible (higher energy) light are utilized in a study.

is a Gram-negative bacillus responsible for a wide variety of potentially fatal infections and, in turn, constitutes a critical agent of healthcare-associated infections. Moreover, is characterized by multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and carbapenemase (KPC) producer strains, representing a significant health problem. Because resistances make it difficult to eradicate using antibiotics, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) promises to be a favorable approach to complementing conventional therapy against MDR bacteria.

Unlabelled: Cytarabine (CTR) is a hydrophilic anticancer drug used to treat leukemia. It suffers from poor permeability and intestinal metabolism, diminishing its oral bioavailability.
Background/objectives: The objective was to develop and evaluate niosomes and bilosomes for enhanced intestinal absorption; hence, oral bioavailability.

Anastomotic leakage (AL) is one of the most devastating complications after colorectal surgery. The verification of the adequate perfusion of the anastomosis is essential to ensuring anastomosis integrity following colonic resections. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of measuring the electrical activity of the colonic muscularis externa at an anastomosis site for perfusion analysis following colorectal surgery.

Inferring the direction of image motion is an important component of visual processing. A study with in vivo dual electrophysiological recording now reveals that the sensitivity of visual cortical neurons to the direction of motion is established by specific neural connections from the visual thalamus.
