Natural radiation is a feature of the environment in which we live. One of the contributions of human exposure to ionizing radiation due to natural sources arises from gamma radiation. Therefore, present study was aimed to evaluate and map indoor gamma dose rate in Tehran. The corresponding annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were also calculated. All measurements were performed by a Geiger Muller detector in 43 dwellings in Tehran. The average indoor gamma dose rate in Tehran was appointed as 343.2 nGy/h. AED and ELCR were calculated as 2.4 mSv and 10.3 × 10-3, respectively. The evaluated indoor gamma dose rate and calculated AEDs and lifetime cancer risk were found higher than the world average value.

We investigate methods that improve the estimation of indoor gamma ray dose rates at locations where measurements had not been made. These new predictions use a greater range of modelling techniques and larger variety of explanatory variables than our previous examinations of this subject. Specifically, we now employ three types of machine learning models in addition to the geostatistical, nearest neighbour and other earlier models.

Gamma-ray spectrometry was employed to assess the activity concentrations of primordial radionuclides (U, Th, and K) in various construction materials, including those used for building, roofing, furnishing, flooring, and plastering. The measured activity concentrations of the radionuclides ranged as follows: U (25 to 477 Bq kg), Th (below detection limit to 239 Bq kg), and K (285 to 1915 Bq kg). Based on these values, the materials were categorized in descending order of radioactivity threat as: Furnishing > Roofing > Building > Flooring > Plastering.

Biological contamination in larger indoor environments can lead to the outbreak of various infectious diseases. This study aimed to compare the pollution profiles and associated health risks of airborne microorganisms in different indoor settings between urban and suburban areas by culturing, sequencing, and toxicological evaluation. The results indicated that the average level of culturable bacteria was higher in urban areas (955 ± 259 CFU/m) compared to suburban areas (850 ± 85 CFU/m), with the highest concentrations found in the market (2170 ± 798 CFU/m) and gymnasium (2010 ± 300 CFU/m).
