Calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) are frequently used as synthetic bone substitute, but their intrinsic low fracture toughness impedes their application in highly loaded skeletal sites. However, fibers can be used to reduce the brittleness of these CPCs provided that the affinity between the fibers and cement matrix facilitates the transfer of loads from the matrix to the fibers. The aim of the present work was to improve the interface between hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) microfibers and hydrophilic CPC. To this end, calcium-binding alendronate groups were conjugated onto the surface of PLA microfibers via different strategies to immobilize a tunable amount of alendronate onto the fiber surface. CPCs reinforced with PLA fibers revealed toughness values which were up to 50-fold higher than unreinforced CPCs. Nevertheless, surface functionalization of PLA microfibers with alendronate groups did not improve the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced CPCs.

Background/objectives: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) results in a progressive decline of lung function due to scarring. Drugs are among the most common causes of PF. The objective of our study was to reveal the structure of drugs involved in PF development.

Unlabelled: A cost-effectiveness analysis of FRAX® intervention thresholds (ITs) in Indian women over 50 years indicated that generic alendronate was cost-effective for age-dependent major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) ITs and hip fracture (HF) ITs starting at ages 60 and 65 years for full and real-world adherence, respectively. Alendronate was cost-effective at fixed MOF IT of 14% and HF IT of 3.5%, regardless of age.

Introduction: Managing osteoporotic patients at immediate fracture risk is challenging, in part due to the slow and localized effects of anti-osteoporotic drugs. Combining systemic anti-osteoporotic therapies with local bone augmentation techniques offers a promising strategy, but little is known about potential interactions. We hypothesized that integrating systemic treatments with local bone-strengthening biomaterials would have an additive effect on bone density and structure.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical and osseointegrative properties of 3D printed porous PEEK materials loaded with strontium (Sr) and alendronate (ALN), which prepared porous cylindrical material by a fused deposition molding process, coated with Sr and ALN by hydrothermal reaction and dopamine assistance. According to the different coating materials, it could be divided into the PEEK group, PEEK-ALN group, PEEK-Sr group and PEEK-ALN-Sr group. After completing the mechanical analyses, the materials were implanted into the femoral condyles of New Zealand rabbits and the osteogenic capacity of the bracket materials was assessed by Micro-CT scanning, histology and fluorescence staining.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the histological response of dental pulp when treated with two materials—alendronate and Biodentine—during a direct pulp capping procedure on rabbits.
  • Twenty-four anterior teeth were tested, with one group capped with alendronate and the other with Biodentine, followed by a 30-day observation period for histological analysis after the rabbits were euthanized.
  • Results showed that Biodentine formed a more uniform and dense dentin bridge with less inflammation, indicating better biocompatibility, while alendronate produced varied results but still promoted reparative dentin formation.
