Sugarcane Pan-Transcriptome Identifying a Master Gene Regulating Lignin and Sugar Traits.

J Agric Food Chem

January 2025

State Key Laboratory for Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources, Guangxi University, Nanning 530005, China.

Sugarcane has the most complex polyploid genome in the world, and sugar-related traits are one of the most important aims in sugarcane breeding. It is essential to construct a representative pan-transcriptome that contains all transcripts of a species for studies on genetic diversity, population expression, and omics analyses in sugarcane. In this study, we constructed the first comprehensive pan-transcriptome for sugarcane, and 8434 highly reliable open reading frames were found, which were not aligned with any published sugarcane genome.

Despite recent advances in mammalian synthetic biology, there remains a lack of modular synthetic receptors that can robustly respond to soluble ligands and, in turn, activate bespoke cellular functions. Such receptors would have extensive clinical potential to regulate the activity of engineered therapeutic cells, but so far only receptors against cell-surface targets have approached clinical translation. To address this gap, here we adapt a receptor architecture called the synthetic intramembrane proteolysis receptor (SNIPR) for activation by soluble ligands.

H-NS is a Transcriptional Repressor of the CRISPR-Cas System in Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606.

J Microbiol

November 2024

Department of Microbiology, School of Medicine, Kyungpook National University, 680 Gukchaebosang- Ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, 41944, Republic of Korea.

Acinetobacter baumannii is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic pathogen primarily associated with hospital-acquired infections. The bacterium can gain multidrug resistance through several mechanisms, including horizontal gene transfer. A CRISPR-Cas system including several Cas genes could restrict the horizontal gene transfer.

Objective: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a commonly used strategy for treating menopausal symptoms, while its relation with periodontitis remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the potential effects of HRT on periodontitis, mainly in aspects of bone loss and inflammation.

Methods: The alveolar bone height (ABH), alveolar bone thickness (ABT), and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured in menopausal women with periodontitis who had received HRT or had not received HRT by cone beam computed tomography.

Article Synopsis
  • The expression of ABO (ABH) antigens on red blood cells and the secretion of ABH substances in bodily fluids are controlled by different genes, with the Secretor gene determining secretor status.
  • A study conducted on 318 blood donors in South India from Jan 2020 to Dec 2021 found that 72% were secretors while 28% were nonsecretors, revealing a clear relationship between secretor status and Lewis phenotyping.
  • The findings suggest that knowing the Lewis phenotype can help identify blood group secretor status, which is crucial for resolving discrepancies in ABO blood groups in medical settings.
