Background: Fixation preserves the tissues in a close to the life-like state by preventing its autolysis and putrefaction. Formalin has long been considered the close to ideal fixative for histological studies. With the awareness of occupational hazards, a few researchers have tried phenoxetol as a secondary preservative which offered comparable histological results to that of formalin.

Mechanism of probiotics in the intervention of colorectal cancer: a review.

World J Microbiol Biotechnol

August 2024

School of Food Science and Engineering, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, 510640, China.

The human microbiome interacts with the host mainly in the intestinal lumen, where putrefactive bacteria are suggested to promote colorectal cancer (CRC). In contrast, probiotics and their isolated components and secreted substances, display anti-tumor properties due to their ability to modulate gut microbiota composition, promote apoptosis, enhance immunity, resist oxidation and alter metabolism. Probiotics help to form a solid intestinal barrier against damaging agents via altering the gut microbiota and preventing harmful microbes from colonization.

Electronic address:

Although thermosonication (TS) treatment has been widely used in food sterilization, the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) of bacteria with TS treatment has still concerned potential food safety and public health. The molecular mechanism of VBNC status of bacteria with TS treatment is not clearly known. Therefore, in this study, we used Shewanella putrefaciens, which was a common putrefactive bacteria in aquatic products, to study the VBNC state of bacteria with TS treatment.
