In response to our critics, we clarify and defend key ideas in the report . First, we argue that procedural fairness has greater value than Dan Hausman allows. Second, we argue that the Report aligns with John Kinuthia's view that a knowledgeable public and a capable civil society, alongside good facilitation, are important for effective public deliberation.

Simulating synergism or antagonism in binary mixtures with different modeling approaches - A case study focused on the effect of disinfection by-products on algal growth.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Laboratoire National d'Hydraulique et Environnement (LNHE), Division Recherche et Développement, Electricité de France (EDF), 6 Quai de Watier, 78401 Chatou Cedex 01, France.

This paper aims to test several modeling approaches for predicting toxicity of binary mixtures with potential synergy and antagonism. The approach based on the construction of isoboles was first tested and criticized. In contrast to conventional approaches, and in order to be mathematically consistent with the additivity assumptions, non-linear isoboles have been constructed.

Objectives: The concept of successful aging has been criticized for overlooking the experiences of older adults aging with disabilities, which may accentuate segregation and consolidate inequities. This qualitative study explored how older people living with early-onset mobility disabilities define successful aging, whether their definitions differ from those proposed by academia and from those of older people without disabilities, and to what extent older people with motor disabilities perceive themselves as aging successfully.

Method: Thirty-two people (20 women, 12 men) aged over 60 and living with motor disabilities for a minimum of 20 years were interviewed about their definition of successful aging and whether they considered that they were aging successfully.

Dysfunctional response inhibition, mediated by the striatum and its connections, is thought to underly the clinical manifestations of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the exact neural mechanisms remain controversial. In this study, we undertook a novel approach by positing that a) inhibition is a dynamic construct inherently susceptible to numerous failures, which require error-processing, and b) the actor-critic framework of reinforcement learning can integrate neural patterns of inhibition and error-processing in OCD with their behavioural correlates.

Beyond the Myths: Brazilian Consumer Perceptions of Functional Food.

Foods

December 2024

Laboratório Multidisciplinar em Alimentos e Saúde, Faculdade de Ciências Aplicadas, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Limeira 13484-350, SP, Brazil.

The growing consumer interest in functional foods and healthy eating can unfortunately lead to the spread of misinformation and the belief in food-related myths. This study analyzed Brazilian consumers' perceptions and beliefs about facts and myths regarding functional foods, focusing on attitudes, reference groups, and sociocultural factors affecting their perception. A theoretical model was developed, incorporating constructs such as attitudes (reward, trust, necessity, safety), beliefs, and reference groups.
