Spherical expansions of sound radiation from resilient and rigid disks with reduced error.

Published: September 2018

This paper derives expressions for the sound pressure due to free-space resilient and rigid disks using a spherical harmonic expansion. A method is derived for improving the convergence and reducing the error of the expansions for radii less than the disk radius. Low-frequency approximations are also derived which simplify calculation at low frequencies. The results are verified by comparison with numerical solutions and the error is compared with existing paraxial solutions.

Pandemic antigones: The role of women in shaping funeral practices in Chile.

Death Stud

January 2025

Social Sciences Faculty, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

This study, conducted in 2020, investigates the impact of health restrictions on funeral rites during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile, based on the experience of women who took part in these rites. Using Antigone's tragedy as a theoretical framework, it explores the tension between the moral law of honoring the deceased and the universal law manifested in pandemic-related restrictions-four semi-structured online interviews with women in Santiago who engaged in adapted funeral practices. The qualitative analysis revealed that participants developed innovative rituals to maintain the dignity of farewells and reintegrate the deceased into public and symbolic spheres, such as virtual gatherings and personalized tributes.

Mechanically Resilient and Highly Efficient Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells with Octylammonium Acetate for Surface Adhesion and Stress Relief.

State Key Laboratory of Wide-Bandgap Semiconductor Devices and Integrated Technology, Faculty of Integrated Circuit, Xidian University, 710071 Xi'an, China.

Flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs) have advanced significantly because of their excellent power-per-weight performance and affordable manufacturing costs. The unsatisfactory efficiency and mechanical stability of FPSCs are bottleneck challenges that limit their application. Here, we explore the use of octylammonium acetate (OAAc) with a long, intrinsic, flexible molecular chain on perovskite films for surface adhesion and mechanical releasing.

Ceramic aerogels are promising high-temperature thermal insulation materials due to their outstanding thermal stability and oxidation resistance. However, restricted by nanoparticle-assembled network structures, conventional ceramic aerogels commonly suffer from inherent brittleness, volume shrinkage, and structural collapse at high temperatures. Here, to overcome such obstacles, 3D ultralight and highly porous carbon tube foams (CTFs) were designed and synthesized as the carbonaceous precursors, where melamine foams were used as the sacrificial templates to form the hollow and thin-wall network structures in the CTFs (density: ∼4.

Insect-inspired passive wing collision recovery in flapping wing microrobots.

State Key Laboratory of Robotics, Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China.

Flying insects have developed two distinct adaptive strategies to minimize wing damage during collisions. One strategy includes an elastic joint at the leading edge, which is evident in wasps and beetles, while another strategy features an adaptive and deformable leading edge, as seen in bumblebees and honeybees. Inspired by the latter, a novel approach has been developed for improving collision recovery in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) by mimicking the principle of stiffness anisotropy present in the leading edges of these insects.
