The energy landscape of carbon is exceedingly complex, hosting diverse and important metastable phases, including diamond, fullerenes, nanotubes, and graphene. Searching for structures, especially those with large unit cells, in this landscape is challenging. Here we use a combined stochastic search strategy employing two algorithms (ab initio random structure search and random sampling strategy combined with space group and graph theory) to apply connectivity constraints to unit cells containing up to 100 carbon atoms. We uncover three low energy carbon polymorphs (Pbam-32, P6/mmm, and I4[over ¯]3d) with new topologies, containing 32, 36, and 94 atoms in their primitive cells, respectively. Their energies relative to diamond are 96, 131, and 112 meV/atom, respectively, which suggests potential metastability. These three carbon allotropes are mechanically and dynamically stable, insulating carbon crystals with superhard mechanical properties. The I4[over ¯]3d structure possesses a direct band gap of 7.25 eV, which is the widest gap in the carbon allotrope family. Silicon, germanium, and tin versions of Pbam-32, P6/mmm, and I4[over ¯]3d also show energetic, dynamical, and mechanical stability. The computed electronic properties show that they are potential materials for semiconductor and photovoltaic applications.

Heterogeneity engineering provides an effective route to manipulate the chemical and physical properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) but is still under development for their single-crystal form. Here, we report the strategy based on a combination of the template-assisted modulated synthesis with a one-pot crystallization-reduction method to directly construct ordered macro-microporous single crystals of an amine-linked three-dimensional (3D) COF (OM-COF-300-SR). In this strategy, the colloidal crystal-templating synthesis not only assists the formation of ordered macropores but also greatly facilitates the in situ conversion of linkages (from imine to amine) in the COF-300 single crystals.

The spin relaxation of an Er tetranuclear single-molecule magnet, , (hdcCOT = hexahydrodicyclopentacyclooctatetraenide dianion), is modeled as a near-tetrahedral arrangement of Ising-type spins. Combining evidence from single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and computational techniques, the slow spin relaxation is interpreted as a consequence of symmetry restrictions imposed on quantum tunneling within the cluster core. The union of spin and spatial symmetries describe a ground state spin-spin coupled manifold wherein 16 eigenvectors generate the 3D quantum spin-space described by the vertices of a rhombic dodecahedron.

Self-assembly of nanoparticles into supercrystals represents a powerful approach to create unique and complex superstructures with fascinating properties and novel functions, but the complexity in spatial configuration, and the tunability in lattice structure are still quite limited compared to the crystals formed by atoms and molecules. Herein, shallowly concave gold nanoarrows with a unique concave-convex geometry are synthesized and employed as novel building blocks for shape-directed self-assembly of a wealth of complex 3D supercrystals with unprecedented configurations. The obtained diverse superstructures including six Interlocking-type supercrystals and three Packing-type supercrystals exhibit four types of Bravais lattices (i.

Background: Total body irradiation (TBI) is a pivotal part of conditioning prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), yet evidence is sparse regarding the effect of TBI delivery techniques on acute and late toxicities.
Design: In a national cohort of pediatric HSCT-recipients, we compared three TBI schedules; 12 Gray (Gy) delivered as (i) 4 Gy daily fractions from 2008 to 2011 (n = 12); (ii) 2 Gy fractions twice daily with two-dimensional (2D) planning technology from 2012 to 2015 (n = 16); and (iii) 2 Gy twice daily with three-dimensional (3D) planning intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) from 2016 to 2020 (n = 14).
Results: The 5-year event-free survival was 75.
