In this issue of Structure, Zheng et al. (2018) have described the dynamics of PPARγ in complex with a non-agonist by exploring its solution-phase conformational landscape through chemical cross-linking in combination with a multitude of different treatment conditions, including their new synthetic anti-diabetic non-agonist, revealing the physical mechanism of PPARγ inactivation.

Metal ions are indispensable to life, as they can serve as essential enzyme cofactors to drive fundamental biochemical reactions, yet paradoxically, excess is highly toxic. Higher-order cells have evolved functionally distinct organelles that separate and coordinate sophisticated biochemical processes to maintain cellular homeostasis upon metal ion stimuli. Here, we uncover the remodeling of subcellular architecture and organellar interactome in yeast initiated by several metal ion stimulations, relying on near-native three-dimensional imaging, cryo-soft X-ray tomography.

The phylogeographic inference approach aims to connect genomic data with epidemiology to understand the spread and evolution of pathogens using visualization of spatiotemporal reconstructions. Orthohantavirus hantanense (HTNV), the causative agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), represents a significant global public health concern. Here, we introduce a localized Nextstrain platform for HTNV, offering a comprehensive resource for facilitating spatiotemporal genomic surveillance and the study of evolutionary dynamics of viral genomes.

Superhydrophobic fabrics suffer from being commonly penetrated by moisture after laundering, seriously deteriorating their water repellency after air drying. Numerous researchers have successfully recovered superhydrophobicity by drying in fluid ovens; however, high energy consumption and equipment dependence limit practical applications. Herein, the superhydrophobic photothermal self-healing cotton fabric (SPS cotton fabric) was fabricated by depositing a composite layer of cellulose nanocrystal-MXene (C-MXene) and polyacrylate (PA) coatings on the cotton cloth.

The World Health Organization has identified multidrug-resistant bacteria as a serious global health threat. Gram-negative bacteria are particularly prone to antibiotic resistance, and their high rate of antibiotic resistance has been suggested to be related to the complex structure of their cell membrane. The outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria contains lipopolysaccharides that protect the bacteria against threats such as antibiotics, while the inner membrane houses 20-30% of the bacterial cellular proteins.
