Hubel and Wiesel's ice-cube model proposed that V1 orientation and ocular dominance functional maps intersect orthogonally to optimize wiring efficiency. Here, we revisited this model and additional arrangements at both cellular and pixel levels in awake macaques using two-photon calcium imaging. The recorded response fields of view were similar in size to hypercolumns, each containing up to 2,000 identified neurons and representing full periods of orientation preferences and ocular dominance.

Advances in our approach to treating pain and sedation when caring for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) have been propelled by decades of robust trial data, knowledge gained from patient experiences, and our evolving understanding of how pain and sedation strategies affect patient survival and long term outcomes. These data contribute to current practice guidelines prioritizing analgesia-first sedation strategies (analgosedation) that target light sedation when possible, use of short acting sedatives, and avoidance of benzodiazepines. Together, these strategies allow the patient to be more awake and able to participate in early mobilization and family interactions.

Niels Lassen's seminal 1959 cerebral autoregulation plot, a cornerstone in understanding the relationship between mean arterial pressure (MAP) and cerebral blood flow (CBF), was based on preexisting literature. However, this work has faced criticism for selective data presentation, leading to inaccurate interpretation. This review revisits and validates Lassen's original plot using contemporary data published since 2000.

Utilizing dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and fluorescent fiber photometry, we report brain glymphatic clearance is enhanced by both sleep and anesthesia, and sharply suppressed by wakefulness. Another key finding was that less tracer enters the brains of awake animals and that brain clearance across different brain states can only be compared after adjusting for the injected tracer dose.
