The present work reports the development and application of bismuth-film electrode (BiFE), obtained by in situ method on the pencil-lead graphite surface, for simultaneous Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination at trace levels, as alternative to replace the mercury-film electrodes. Experimental factors, deposition time ( ), deposition potential ( ), and Bi(III) concentration ( ), were investigated by applying a 2 factorial design using 0.10 mol/L acetate buffer solution (pH 4.5) as supporting electrolyte. The analysis conditions of the differential pulse technique were = 250 s, = -1.40 V, and = 250 mg L. The validation of the method employing BiFE was accomplished by determination of merit figures. The detection limits were of 11.0 g L for Cd(II) and 11.5 g L for Pb(II), confirming that proposed method is attractive and suitable for heavy metals determination. Additionally, the BiFE developed was successfully applied for the Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination in wastewater sample of battery industry.

In the present work, we report the synthesis and evaluation of a graphite-supported bismuth film working electrode (BiFE) in the simultaneous quantification of Hg(II) and Pb(II) at ppb levels. The BiFE was synthesized in-situ by electrodeposition in 1 M HNO as the supporting electrolyte at -0.5 V potential.

Cadmium is one of the most dangerous pollutants found in the environment, where it exists mainly due to human activities. High cadmium concentrations can cause serious problems, which is why the detection and determination of Cd is one of the most important tasks. Electroanalytical methods provide rapid and accurate results in the detection of cadmium in various solutions.

The effect of Bi-to-metal ion concentration ratio ( / ratio) on key evaluation indicators, including sensitivity, precision, and cathodic potential range, has been investigated for the determination of Cd and Pb at prepared bismuth film electrodes. Unlike the usual recommendation of at least a 10-fold excess of Hg(ii) for anodic stripping experiments at prepared mercury film electrodes, it is found that the / ratios in the 1-10 range are sufficient to obtain a high determination sensitivity, but that the signal decreases significantly when the ratio exceeds 40. Further analysis shows that the precision of the analytical results is good when the / ratio is in the range of 5-10.

Heavy metals constitute pollutants that are particularly common in air, water, and soil. They are present in both urban and rural environments, on land, and in marine ecosystems, where they cause serious environmental problems since they do not degrade easily, remain almost unchanged for long periods, and bioaccumulate. The detection and especially the quantification of metals require a systematic process.
