Two new compounds, versicolones A and B ( and ), and three known pyrone derivatives (-) were isolated from the insect-associated fungus . Their structures were elucidated through a combination of HRESIMS and NMR spectroscopic analysis. Versicolone A () was revealed as a coumarin derivative with the rare 5-alkyl side chain substitution. Compound exhibited significant antioxidant activity with EC value of 8.0 μM in the ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assay, which was more than 2-fold potency of the positive control trolox.

Sporopollenin is a plant polymer present in the exine of the pollen grains that comprises two layers: the endexine and the ektexine. It possesses remarkable mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability and is also highly recalcitrant to hydrolysis. The chemical backbone of sporopollenin mostly consists of a polyhydroxylated aliphatic component and polyketide-derived aliphatic α-pyrone elements.

A novel approach for the synthesis of pyrone and indanone derivatives utilizing Fe(III)-catalyzed reductive radical ring expansion of olefins and cyclopropenone has been proposed. The preliminary mechanism study shows that the alkyl radical is formed by hydrogen atom transfer, which can open the tension ring and then generate the intermediate. There are two paths for the intermediate: when there is a hydroxyl group at the β-position of the olefin, the reaction produces pyrones, and otherwise 1-indanone is generated.

, a common foodborne pathogen, has a close association with agriculture and food. With the rapid emergence and widespread dissemination of antimicrobial resistance, efforts have been directed toward developing and studying new antimicrobial compounds to inhibit the growth of and other foodborne pathogens, thereby preventing contamination and ensuring food safety. Herein, we reported eight new aromatic polyketides, naphpyrones A-H (-), from the heterologous expression strain A3(2)/ ΔH3.

Iron is essential for the formation, maturation and dispersal of bacterial biofilms, playing a crucial role in the physiological and metabolic functions of bacteria as well as in the regulation of virulence. Limited availability of iron can impair the formation of robust biofilms by altering cellular motility, hydrophobicity and protein composition of the bacterial surface. In this study, the antibiofilm activity of two natural iron chelating agents, kojic acid (5-hydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-4H-pyran-4-one) and maltol (3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone), were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Four novel resorcylic acid lactones (RALs), curvulomycins A-D (1-4), and six known congeners were isolated from the Beibu Gulf coral-derived fungus GXIMD 02512. Their structures including absolute configurations were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses along with experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Structurally, compound 3 harbors a unique γ-pyrone moiety rarely found in the natural RAL family.
