Vitamin D is a secosterol hormone critical for bone growth and calcium homeostasis, produced in vertebrate skin by photolytic conversion of the cholesterol biosynthetic intermediate provitamin D. Insufficient levels of vitamin D especially in the case of low solar UV-B irradiation is often compensated by an intake of a dietary source of vitamin D of animal origin. Small amounts of vitamin D were described in a few plant species and considered as a peculiar feature of their phytochemical diversity. In this report we show the presence of vitamin D in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. This plant secosterol is a UV-B mediated derivative of provitamin D, the precursor of sitosterol. The present work will allow a further survey of vitamin D distribution in plant species.

De novo shoot regeneration, characterized by the emergence of adventitious shoots from excised or damaged tissues or organs in vitro, is regulated by the complex interplay between genetic and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. However, the specific effect of histone deacetylation on shoot regeneration remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of trichostatin A (TSA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, on shoot regeneration in callus derived from root explants.

Dissecting the mechanisms underlying heat tolerance is important for understanding how plants acclimate to heat stress. Here, we identify a heat-responsive gene in Arabidopsis thaliana, RNA-DIRECTED DNA METHYLATION 16 (RDM16), which encodes a pre-mRNA splicing factor. Knockout mutants of RDM16 are hypersensitive to heat stress, which is associated with impaired splicing of the mRNAs of 18 out of 20 HEAT SHOCK TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR (HSF) genes.

Class III peroxidases (PRXs) play critical roles in plant growth and development by oxidizing various substrates with HO. Although many PRXs have been identified and their roles in biotic and abiotic stress responses have extensively investigated in plants. However, functional mechanisms of PRXs in seed development remain poorly understood.

Sugarcane has the most complex polyploid genome in the world, and sugar-related traits are one of the most important aims in sugarcane breeding. It is essential to construct a representative pan-transcriptome that contains all transcripts of a species for studies on genetic diversity, population expression, and omics analyses in sugarcane. In this study, we constructed the first comprehensive pan-transcriptome for sugarcane, and 8434 highly reliable open reading frames were found, which were not aligned with any published sugarcane genome.
