Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted ethnic minority and other underserved communities, prompting the federal government to fund community-led health literacy initiatives. This evaluation shares challenges and lessons learned, and identifies best practices from community-based organizations (CBOs) partnering with academia and local government to support health literacy programming.
Methods: In 2023, 20 representatives from 12 CBOs in Southern California responded to an interviewer-administered survey, including open-ended questions about lessons learned.

Purpose: Extramural funding is critical to career success and advancement in academic surgery, and surgical residents can apply for both societal and federal funding. Many federal funding mechanisms require proposals to be submitted before residents' formal research years.
Methods: To better understand the resident experience with grantsmanship, we distributed a validated grantsmanship self-efficacy assessment inventory for voluntary completion at our academic general surgery training program with 2 years of dedicated research.

In this article, the author reflects upon recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have led to profound discussions about AI's role in scientific research and education. AI technologies are now capable of summarizing and analyzing large volumes of data, creating presentations, and even drafting parts of scientific papers and grants with minimal human input. With their exponential ongoing advancements, they will become even more capable in doing these tasks.

The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award offers promising postdoctoral researchers and clinician-scientists an opportunity to receive research support at both the mentored and the independent levels with the goal of facilitating a timely transition to a tenure-track faculty position. This transitional program has been generally successful, with most K99/R00 awardees successfully securing R01-equivalent funding by the end of the R00 period. However, often highly promising proposals fail because of poor grantsmanship.
