Background: The age estimation of bone is essential for identification of the unknown-identity persons in both forensic and anthropological sciences. The lumbar vertebrae carry the most weight; hence, they have more biomechanical stress than any other vertebrae. As a result, the degenerative changes commonly occur in them. However, the estimation from visual assessment in lumbar vertebrae has not been reported in a Thai population.

Objective: To evaluate the age estimation from the degree of osteophyte formation, the macroporosity, and the cortical surface to develop equations of lumbar vertebrae.

Materials And Methods: A total of 250 lumbar columns (125 males and 125 females) in age range of 22 to 89 years were collected from the Forensic Osteology Research Center (FORC), Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University.

Result: The most appropriate linear regression equation was used to estimate age by the inferior surface of L1 vertebra (R2= 0.408) with the standard error of 11.686 years.

Conclusion: It was clear to recognize that three morphological aspects will be useful methods for forensic situations.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A.

Background: Incidence data on Facial Nerve Disorders (FND) and Bell's palsy are currently limited. Prior epidemiological studies have estimated the incidence rate of Bell's palsy to be between 11 and 53/100,000 individuals, although the most cited incidence data are from single regions or municipalities, many of which are outdated from several decades ago.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of US adults from 2007 to 2022 using the Merative™ Marketscan® Research Databases.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia, characterized by amyloid-β plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. With an aging population, both AD and comorbidities are increasingly common. Managing comorbidities often requires multiple medications, leading to polypharmacy, defined as the concurrent use of five or more medications.

The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between slaughter weight (SW) with body components and liner body measurements and investigate the coefficient of correlation between slaughter weight with body component and liner body measurements to select the best regression equation. Data on liner body measurements (height at wither and at hips, heart girth, body length, height and width of hump, height at fall and hind legs, body sheath height, height at hooks, barrel circumference, width of face, length of face and tail circumference) and slaughter weight of body components (Hot Carcass Weight (HCW), Empty Body Weight (ESW), Internal Offal (IO) and External Offal (EO)) were collected from 62 Hararghe cattle at Haramaya University abattoir. ESW was calculated as SW with less gut contents.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most diagnosed digestive disorders, with much-conducted research assessing its prevalence and risk factors associated with it worldwide. However, there are no published previous studies to determine such disease and its burden in Bahrain. Hence, this study aims to estimate the prevalence and evaluate the risk factors associated with GERD among adults attending primary care in Bahrain.

Background: Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) is the most common cause of sporadic encephalitis that often presents as an emergency case of acute or sub-acute nature associated with poor prognosis. Early suspicion and prompt diagnostic testing with adequate antiviral therapy can only reduce morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. This study aims to evaluate the role of serological and molecular diagnosis of encephalitis caused by HSV 1 and 2 for timely detection of the disease.
