Group A (GAS), particularly (), is a significant human pathogen responsible for infections often ranging from mild superficial conditions to severe, life-threatening diseases like necrotizing fasciitis (NF) and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). This case report details the rapid deterioration of a previously healthy 49-year-old woman who presented with localized symptoms in her left thigh, later escalating to septic shock and multi-organ failure related to GAS infection. Initial evaluations indicated significant inflammation and acute kidney injury, prompting broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment.

Background: Desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the superficial digital flexor tendon (AL-SDFT) has been described for the treatment of superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) tendinopathy in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses, and in event horses. To our knowledge, the outcome of this procedure has not been described in a population of warmblood horses.

Objective: To report on the outcome of treatment of SDFT tendinopathy in warmblood horses using tenoscopic desmotomy of the main part of the AL-SDFT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between patient frailty status and outcomes of transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgeries, analyzing data from a multicenter database between 2015 and 2020.
  • Patients were categorized into low and high frailty groups based on a modified frailty index, and various surgical outcomes and complications were compared between these cohorts.
  • Results indicated higher rates of complications and unplanned readmissions in the frail group, alongside longer hospital stays and a greater likelihood of being discharged to institutions rather than their homes, highlighting frailty as a significant predictor of surgical risk in TLIF patients.

Impact of an enhanced anti-infection prophylaxis strategy for pancreatoduodenectomy: a single centre analysis.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

Department of Visceral, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Dresden, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgical site infections (SSI) after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) are a major concern, prompting the study to assess whether enhanced anti-infective prophylaxis (EAP) reduces SSI rates compared to standard prophylaxis.
  • A retrospective analysis of 163 patients showed that those who received EAP had significantly lower SSI rates (14% vs. 37%) and urinary tract infections (8% vs. 24%) than those who received standard prophylaxis.
  • The findings suggest that EAP not only reduces the incidence of SSIs but may also lower the risk of gastrointestinal complications post-surgery, with age over 67 identified as a significant SSI risk factor.
