Cadmium (Cd) is known to be a potentially toxic heavy metals to the fish health and growth. Carassius auratus gibelio (C. a. gibelio) specimens were exposed to waterborne Cd (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 mg/L CdCl) for 14 days. Cd accumulation, liver and intestine histopathology, and intestinal microorganism were investigated in the present study. The results indicated that Cd accumulation in the gill, liver, intestine, and muscle gradually decreased as Cd concentration increased. The gill accumulated higher amounts of Cd than other tissues. The histopathology of liver and intestine underwent changes with different Cd concentrations, including hepatocyte hypertrophy, aggregation of blood cells, sinusoids, lipidosis, necrosis of hepatic tissues, the erosion of villi, necrosis in the mucosal layer, the appearance of vacuoles in the lamina propria, hyperplasia, and swelling of goblet cells. Moreover, the core gut microbiota existed in the intestinal microorganism and did not change as Cd concentration increased. However, the diversity of intestinal microorganism was significantly reduced compared with that of the control sample. The present results indicated that C. a. gibelio exposed to Cd suffered toxicity, and Cd could affect the biodiversity of the intestinal microbiota of C. a. gibelio.

This study investigated the preventive and protective effects of Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides (PP) on Acute liver injury (ALI) in mice and its regulatory effects on intestinal microorganisms, and explored the underlying protective mechanisms. Initially, PP was administered, and then CCl4 was used to induce the mouse ALI model. Serum and liver markers were measured by ELISA.

Background: Kombucha, a fermented beverage obtained from a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY), has shown potential in modulating gut microbiota, although no clinical trials have been done.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effects of regular black tea kombucha consumption on intestinal health in individuals with and without obesity.

Methods: A pre-post clinical intervention study was conducted lasting eight weeks.

Ionizing radiation-induced injury often occurs in nuclear accidents or large-dose radiotherapy, leading to acute radiation syndromes characterized by hematopoietic and gastrointestinal injuries even to death. However, current radioprotective drugs are only used in hospitals with unavoidable side effects. Here, we heated the aqueous solution of inulin, a polysaccharide dietary fiber, forming colon-retentive gel as a radiation protector in radiotherapy.

A Multi-Enzyme Complex That Mitigates Hepatotoxicity, Improves Egg Production and Quality, and Enhances Gut and Liver Health in Laying Hens Exposed to Trace Aflatoxin B.

Toxins (Basel)

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science in East China, Ministry of Agriculture, College of Animal Sciences, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, China.

Aflatoxin B is a prevalent secondary hazardous metabolite generated by fungus present in feed ingredients and the surrounding environment: enzymes are currently being recognized as an efficient and promising approach to reducing the associated risks. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of varying doses of enzyme complexes on several parameters in laying hens that were exposed to aflatoxin. During an 8-week experiment, a total of 288 Yukou Jingfen No.

Lithium Coupled with C6-Carboxyl Improves the Efficacy of Oligoguluronate in DSS-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in C57BL/6J Mice.

Mar Drugs

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Marine Drugs of Ministry of Education, Shandong Key Laboratory of Glycoscience and Glycotechnology, School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ocean University of China, Qingdao 266003, China.

Oligoguluronate lithium (OGLi) was prepared for the purpose of enhancing the anti-ulcerative colitis (UC) activities of OG, in which lithium (Li) is coupled with the C6-carboxyl of G residue. The therapeutic effects of OGLi on dextran sulfate (DSS)-induced UC mice were investigated, and oligoguluronate sodium (OGNa) and lithium carbonate (LC) were used as contrasts. The effects of OGLi, OGNa and LC on the treatment of UC mice were studied by monitoring body weight change and evaluating colon length, the disease activity index (DAI), histopathological examination and gut microbiota regulation.
