Two new rust species, and (Pucciniales) on spp. (Fabaceae) are described from the Neotropics (Panama, Costa Rica). A key to the species on neotropical spp. is provided. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on 28S rDNA sequence data suggest that the representatives of rusts distributed in the neotropics evolved independently from species known from South Africa. This is further supported by the teliospore morphology, which is characterised by uniseriate cysts in the neotropical rusts and contrasting multiseriate cysts in the paleotropic species that infect this host genus.

Departamento de Fitopatologia, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Viçosa, MG, 36570-900, Brazil.

During surveys in the centres of origin of the coffee leaf rust (CLR), in Africa, as well as in its exotic range in Brazil, 23 isolates of the genus were obtained from uredinial pustules. Using a phylogenetic analysis of all isolates involving a combination of partial sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA (ITS) and two gene regions: actin ( and translation elongation factor-1α (), 12 species were delimited; including four new species - , , and . GCPSR criteria were employed for species recognition, supported by morphological and cultural characters.

Rust fungi are important pathogens of trees, ornamental plants, and food crops. Field research targeting rust diseases across Korea uncovered three distinct species of , affecting different members of the family . In our examination of both wild and cultivated grapevine () species, including , , and , we found as well as a previously undescribed rust species, which we describe here as , which was previously identified as a rust pathogen of spp.
