Although the effects of direct and indirect forms of contact on intergroup relations are well documented, little is known about their longitudinal co-development. Based on the social-psychological literature, we hypothesize that indirect contact predicts future direct contact by reducing intergroup anxiety. Across five longitudinal studies (Study 1: German adults, N = 560; Study 2: German, Dutch, and Swedish school students, N = 6,600; Study 3: Northern Irish children, N = 1,593; Study 4: Northern Irish adults, N = 404; Study 5: German adults, N = 735), we systematically examined this effect, and further tested the mediating role of intergroup anxiety in Studies 3 to 5. Cross-lagged models provided consistent evidence for the positive effect of indirect contact on future direct contact, whereas a reduction in intergroup anxiety mediates this effect in most models. Results highlight the importance of indirect contact, which has the potential to increase direct contact, and thus promote social cohesion in diverse contexts, over time. The development of safe, environmentally friendly, edible antimicrobial packaging films represents a promising alternative to conventional plastic packaging for reducing spoilage and extending the shelf life of fresh food. Here, we propose a novel strategy to construct edible β-CD-MOF/carvacrol@zein (BCCZ) composite films by intertwining β-CD-MOF loaded with the antimicrobial essential oil carvacrol, and zein. The resulting BCCZ films exhibit high humidity-triggered, long-lasting bactericidal efficacy, effective fruit preservation, and excellent biosafety.

: In environments with high-frequency contact surfaces, drug-resistant bacteria, such as carbapenem-resistant and methicillin-resistant (MRSA), can survive for extended periods, contributing to healthcare-associated infections. Ultraviolet (UV)-C irradiation often fails to adequately disinfect shadowed areas, leading to a persistent contamination risk. We evaluated the effectiveness of using a UV-C containment unit (UVCCU) in conjunction with UV-C irradiation to improve the sterilization effects on both direct and indirect surfaces, including shadowed areas, and to assess the leakage of UV radiation to the surroundings.

Polymer/ceramic nanocomposites integrated the advantages of both polymers and ceramics for a wide range of biomedical applications, such as bone tissue repair. Here, we reported triphasic poly(lactic--glycolic acid) (PLGA, LA/GA = 90:10) nanocomposites with improved dispersion of hydroxyapatite (HA) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles using a process that integrated the benefits of ultrasonic energy and dual asymmetric centrifugal mixing. We characterized the microstructure and composition of the nanocomposites and evaluated the effects of the HA/MgO ratios on degradation behavior and cell-material interactions.

Altruism is beneficial to society as it promotes mental and physical health alongside economic and societal growth. Previous studies have indicated, however, that people tend not to engage in altruistic behaviors toward strangers. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the factors that motivate individuals to participate in altruistic actions.

Silicon (Si) is regarded as a promising anode material owing to its high specific capacity and low lithiation potential. The large volume change and the pulverization of silicon during the lithiation/delithiation process hinder its direct energy storage application. This review focuses on the electrospun silicon/carbon (Si/C) nanofiber anode materials for lithium-ion batteries for long-term stable energy storage.
