We present a case of massive air inflow into the left ventricle from the right ventricle through a small intraventricular shunt detected by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). This case suggests that TEE plays an important role in the right ventricle-pulmo- nary artery conduit re-replacement.

This research examined the management, financial technology, and environmental taxation elements impacting energy transformation in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries concerning foreign direct investment (FDI). The study aims to analyze data from 2014 to 2022, encompassing a balanced group of 148 BRI member nations-72 from minimal and lower-middle-class countries and 78 from significant and middle-income industrialized nations. Utilizing the two-step systems generalized method of moments (GMM) framework and verifying with the two-stage least squares (2SLS) approach, the study identified critical drivers and barriers to energy transformation in these countries.

Quartz sand proppant is widely used in hydraulic fracturing and the extraction of low-permeability reservoirs to prevent fracture closure and enhance reservoir recovery effectively. The influence of proppant size and type on well productivity has been widely studied, but the mechanism of proppant surface wettability on the hydraulic fracture inflow performance has not been thoroughly investigated. To further understand the influence of proppant wettability on fracture inflow performance, in this work, a hydrophobic quartz sand proppant was prepared by a simple dip-coating method using silane solution with a static water contact angle of 136.

A Clinical Case of Three-Dimensional Electrical Impedance Tomography (3D-EIT) Measurements.

Cureus

November 2024

Department of Joint Research in Advanced Medicine for Electromagnetic Engineering, Shimane University, Izumo, JPN.

Article Synopsis
  • Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that captures the bioelectrical impedance of the chest wall and has recently evolved to produce 3D images rather than just single-plane views.
  • A new prototype of a multi-slice EIT system was tested on a 62-year-old female patient with severe pneumonia, showcasing its ability to generate detailed 3D images that closely matched traditional CT scans.
  • The study revealed an unusual airflow pattern in pneumonia patients, where air entered the upper lung regions first, differing from healthy individuals, highlighting the system’s potential for better understanding lung function in disease contexts.

"Caution with choroidals" - choose the right one at right time.

Indian J Ophthalmol

December 2024

Department of Oculoplasty, Disha Eye Hospitals Pvt Ltd, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Choroidal detachment (CD) during retinal detachment surgery can negatively affect surgical results and vision, necessitating specific management techniques.
  • Cannula-guided choroidal drainage is essential for mitigating pre-existing CDs, especially in complex cases with hemorrhagic detachment.
  • Intraoperative sudden CD can be caused by issues like hypotony or air entry from cannula slippage, which may lead to serious complications like Venous Air Embolism (VAE); prompt action to stop air infusion is critical to prevent life-threatening outcomes.

A modeling approach to dynamically estimating local photochemistry process and its contribution to surface O pollution.

J Environ Manage

November 2024

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing, 100124, China; Key Laboratory of Beijing on Regional Air Pollution Control, Beijing, 100124, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study addresses the complex problem of ozone (O) pollution in urban areas, focusing on both local photochemical processes and the transport of ozone over distances, particularly in North BTH, China during the summer of 2022.
  • - Researchers created a model to quantify the contribution of local ozone formation (Chem_O) to overall pollution levels, revealing that Chem_O accounted for 17.9-26.0 ppb and 46.7%-62.6% of total ozone in major cities, with variations across city types.
  • - The model also distinguished between ozone inflow and outflow, finding that mega-cities had lower incoming ozone than outgoing, while this trend was reversed in smaller cities, offering insights
