Carbon dots (CDs) are usually used as an alternative to other fluorescent nanoparticles. Apart from fluorescence, CDs also have other important properties for use in composite materials, first of all their ability to absorb light energy and convert it into heat. In our work, for the first time, CDs have been proposed as an alternative to gold nanostructures for harvesting light energy, which results in the opening of polymer-based containers with biologically active compounds. In this paper, we propose a method for the synthesis of polylactic acid microchamber arrays with embedded CDs. A comparative analysis was made of the damage to microchambers functionalized with gold nanorods and with CD aggregates, depending on the wavelength and power of the laser used. The release of fluorescent cargo from the microchamber arrays with CD aggregates under laser exposure was demonstrated.

Background: Digital recombinase polymerase amplification (dRPA) is an effective tool for the absolute quantification of nucleic acids and the detection of rare mutations. Due to the high viscosity or other physical properties of the reagent, this can compromise the accuracy and reproducibility of detection results, which limits the broader adoption and practical application of this technology. In this study, we developed an asymmetric contact angle digital isothermal detection (ACA-DID) chip and optimized the ACA-DID chip structure to achieve rapid digital recombinase polymerase amplification.

The monitoring of quorum sensing (QS) signal molecules in bacterial biofilms is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of bacterial biofilms. In this work, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chip integrated with functional units of bacterial biofilms and SERS detection is proposed for the monitoring of pyocyanine, an important signal molecule and biomarker secreted by . The SERS chip was composed of a top self-assembled nano-silver SERS substrate layer, a PDMS layer containing a micro-chamber array and bottom quartz layer.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been considered as the gold standard for detecting nucleic acids. The simple PCR system is of great significance for medical applications in remote areas, especially for the developing countries. Herein, we proposed a low-cost self-assembled platform for microchamber PCR.

Epithelial cells serve as a barrier by tightly adhering to each other and contribute to the homeostasis of living organisms by controlling substance permeation. Therefore, evaluation of the barrier function is important in pharmaceutical development processes. However, the widely used Transwell-based assays require the development of the defect-free epithelial cell monolayer above several tens of mm, often resulting in low reproducibility and requiring a long incubation time.

Rapid and in situ profiling of volatile metabolites from body fluids represents a new trend in cancer diagnosis and classification in the early stages. We report herein an on-chip strategy that combines an array of conductive nanosensors with a chaotic gas micromixer for real-time monitoring of volatiles from urine and for accurate diagnosis and classification of urinary tract cancers. By integrating a class of LEGO-inspired microchambers immobilized with MXene-based sensing nanofilms and zigzag microfluidic gas channels, it enables the intensive intermingling of volatile organic chemicals with sensor elements that tremendously facilitate their ion-dipole interactions for molecular recognition.
