A series of new magnetically-active coordination compounds comprising binuclear mixed-ligand complexes of cobalt bis-diketonates with acene linkers functionalized by two redox-active o-quinone moieties has been designed by means of density functional theory (DFT UB3LYP*/6-311++G(d,p)) calculations of their electronic structure, energy characteristics and magnetic properties. Two types of redox-active ligands include those with an acene linker bridging two o-benzoquinone fragments and the ligands containing an integrated π-conjugated system formed by annulation of o-quinone rings to the polycyclic core. The calculations reveal the dependence of spin density distribution in the compounds under study on the type of ligand. The considered binuclear CoII diketonate adducts manifest the capability of undergoing one- and two-step spin transitions induced by intramolecular electron transfers between the metal ions and the ligand system. An increase in the number of condensed rings of the acene linker promotes the stabilization of the biradicaloid state of the linker and enhances exchange interactions between all paramagnetic centers of the complexes giving rise to the formation of a flexible spin coupling network. The predicted unusual magnetic properties make the binuclear cobalt complexes with di-o-quinone ligand containing acene linker groups the promising building blocks for molecular electronic and spintronic devices.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates fully-organic molecules, particularly diradicals formed from diphenylmethyl cores linked with antiaromatic couplers, as promising components for lightweight, flexible magnetic materials useful in spintronics.
  • - Advanced electronic structure calculations reveal these diradicals can achieve robust high-spin configurations, with singlet-triplet energy gaps significantly exceeding thermal energy at room temperature, making them stable.
  • - The strong interactions between the π-systems of the open-shell centers and the couplers enhance both spin state stability and spin density delocalization, emphasizing the potential of pentalene-based diradicals in developing new organic magnetic materials.

In this study, we designed squaraine-based dyes with a 2-amino pyrrole donor unit and acene groups like anthracene and pentacene. These dyes incorporate three different electron-withdrawing groups - cyanoacrylate (A1), phosphonate (A2) and boronic acid (A3) - as linkers to the TiO semiconductor. The spectroscopic, electronic and photochemical properties of these compounds were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations.

By variation of the chemical repeat units of conjugated polymers, only discrete tuning of essential physical parameters is possible. A unique property of a class of π-conjugated polymers, where polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are linked via ethynylene linkers, is their topological aromatic to quinoid phase transition discovered recently by Cirera et al. and González-Herrero et al.

Radical qubits photo-generated in acene-based metal-organic frameworks.

A series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) assembled with diazatetracene (DAT)-based linkers were synthesized and characterized. Despite different chromophore orientations and spacings, photoinduced persistent radicals were generated in all the MOFs, and their spin-lattice relaxation time () and spin-spin relaxation time () were found to be relatively long even at room temperature. The generality of long and values of photogenerated radicals in the chromophore-assembled MOFs provides a new platform towards quantum sensing applications.

Understanding and controlling electrical conductivity at the single-molecule level is of fundamental importance for the development of new molecular electronic devices. This ideally requires considering the many different options offered by the molecular structure, the nature of the electrodes, and all possible molecule-electrode anchoring configurations, which is experimentally tedious and theoretically very expensive. Here we present a systematic theoretical study of the conductance of di-amino, di-methylthio and di-(4-methylthio)phenyl acenes, from benzene to pentacene, and for all possible distributions of two identical linkers symmetrically placed on opposite sides of the same ring.
