Thumb injuries are not as common as those occurring in the fingers. The authors present the case of a patient who had an isolated avulsion of the extensor pollicis brevis that resulted in metacarpophalangeal joint instability, with intact radial and ulnar collateral ligament.

A 42-year-old man suffered an avulsion amputation of his right middle finger. He had undergone several surgeries since the age of 24, including amputation plasty and implantation of the injured nerve into fat and bone, but had difficulty returning to work due to persistent severe pain. He underwent nerve capping with an artificial nerve conduit at a university hospital, and his symptoms improved slightly, but immediately flared up again.

Intra-articular corticosteroids, such as triamcinolone acetonide (TA), help reduce pain related to osteoarthritis (OA), but they may impair cartilage metabolism. In contrast, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, a regenerative therapy, has shown potential to promote healing and regeneration of articular cartilage. This study investigates the effects of combining PRP with TA to treat osteoarthritis in racehorses.
