Published: November 2018

Electrooxidative peri-C-H activation was accomplished by versatile ruthenium(ii) catalysis in terms of C-H/N-H and C-H/O-H functionalization. Thus, alkyne annulations proved viable with ample scope by organometallic C-H activation. The sustainable electrocatalysis exploited electricity, thereby avoiding the use of toxic transition metals as sacrificial oxidants. The robust ruthenium(ii)-electrocatalysis was operative in a protic alcohol/H2O reaction medium with excellent levels of position-, regio- and chemo-selectivity.

Intermediate Control: Unlocking Hitherto Unknown Reactivity and Selectivity in N-Conjugated Allenes and Alkynes.

ConspectusControlling selectivity through manipulation of reaction intermediates remains one of the most enduring challenges in organic chemistry, providing novel solutions for selective C-C π-bond functionalization. This approach, guided by activation principles, provides an effective method for selective functional group installation, enabling direct synthesis of organic molecules that are inaccessible through conventional pathways. In particular, the selective functionalization of N-conjugated allenes and alkynes has emerged as a promising research focus, driven by advances in controlling reactive intermediates and activation strategies.

Enantioselective [3+2] Annulation of Aldimines with Alkynes by Scandium-Catalyzed C-H Activation.

The enantioselective [3+2] annulation of readily accessible aldimines with alkynes via C-H activation is, in principle, a straightforward and atom-efficient route for synthesizing chiral 1-aminoindenes, which are important components in a wide array of natural products, bioactive molecules, and functional materials. However, such asymmetric transformation has remained undeveloped to date due to the lack of suitable chiral catalysts. Here, we report for the first time the enantioselective [3+2] annulation of aldimines with alkynes via C-H activation using chiral half-sandwich scandium catalysts.

Drastic changes to the character of the acidic catalyst enable the reversal of the double alkyne benzannulation reaction output. In the presence of a strong Brønsted acid, 1,4-dihydropyrrolopyrroles undergo transformation which results in the formation of two 7-membered rings. Computational studies imply that the thermodynamically unfavored 7-membered ring is forged via the kinetically favored attack of a protonated alkyne at the position 3a of pyrrolopyrrole followed by a 1,2-vinyl shift.

Rh(III)-catalyzed dual N-H and triple C-H activation/(4 + 2) annulation of 2-aryl-2,3-dihydro-1-perimidines and alkynes has been disclosed to construct 4,5,14,15-tetrasubstituted cationic azaperylenes with high yields (up to 95%) and broad scope. Tandem (4 + 2) annulation of 1-perimidines with vinylene carbonate and alkynes affords 4,5-disubstituted azaperylene salts, and -alkynyl 1-perimidines undergo an intra- and intermolecular annulation cascade to give 4,5,14-trisubstituted targets. Most of the intermediates were detected by ESI-MS, indicating a convincible mechanism including three possible paths.

College of Biological, Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Jiaxing University, Jiaxing 314001, Zhejiang, China.

In this work, the annulation of acyl nitrene with alkynes is reported under photoredox/iron dual-catalysis for the synthesis of a series of isoquninalin-2-ones. The reaction is featured with a high reaction regioselectivity and good reaction generality. In particular, the resulting isoquinalin-2-ones could be structurally elaborated into several biologically interesting scaffolds.
