Published: March 2020

A new rotenoid named 12--methylrotenolol along with five known rotenoid and isoflavone metabolites were isolated from the seeds of , collected from Egypt. The structures of these compounds were identified by physical and spectroscopic data measurements ([α], UV, 1D- and 2D-NMR and MS). The methanol extract of the seeds exhibited strong antioxidant activity with IC value 0.7 µg/µl against DPPH radical, in respect to quercetin as antioxidant reference (IC 1.5 μM), while the tested compounds from this extract showed weak activities with IC values ranged from 19.6 to 33.0 µM.

The introduction of invasive fish species to aquatic ecosystems has been demonstrated to cause disastrous ecological effects. Current conservation strategies regard rotenone-containing piscicide formulations, such as commercial product CFT Legumine, as a potentially viable alternative to the cumbersome traditional approaches to fish eradication. This consideration relies on the fast degradation of rotenone and its relatively rapid dissipation from the environment.

The phytochemical study of the ethanolic extract of the leaf of led to the isolation of five hitherto unreported compounds including two isoflavones (-), and three rotenoids (-), along with eight known isoflavonoid derivatives (-) and one pterocarpan derivative (). The structures of the new compounds and those of the known ones were established by the spectroscopic (1D and 2D NMR) and spectrometric (HRESIMS) techniques as well as a comparison of their spectroscopic data with those reported in the literature. The leaf extract, fractions, and isolated compounds were tested for their antibacterial effects against nine bacterial strains.
