Avermectins, are pesticides of fermentation products with high efficacy and low toxicity and play important roles in food and agricultural product safety, animal and human health. Ivermectins, the derivatives of avermectins, are used to treat Onchocerciasis, also known as River Blindness. Thanks to these discoveries, more than 200 million Africans are lucky to be exempted from blindness. Great efforts have been made on better understanding of the microbial production system of avermectins through genetic engineering in China. Starting from scratch, Chinese avermectin industry has experienced a comprehensive technological innovation with significantly improved yield, titer and productivity of avermectins, and became the exclusive supplier for the global market. The success of avermectin industry innovation in China not only shed lights on the intelligent yield improvement of other microbial natural product drugs, but also gained wide international recognition. We provide here an overview of the discovery and development of basic and applied research of avermectins, especially historical evolution of avermectins made in China, which will benefit industrial development of microbial drugs in China.

Avermectins (AVMs) and their derivatives are the most effective and widely used nematicides, insecticides, and acaricides against endo- and ectoparasites of plants, animals, and humans. Demand for avermectins and their highly effective derivatives has increased due to their high cost-effectiveness and wide range of applications as medicines and crop protection products. Due to the unique structures of these compounds and for industrial production purposes, numerous efforts and strategies have been dedicated to enhancing the production of avermectins and creating new analogues in recent years.

Cholangiocarcinoma is a malignant tumor that emerges in the intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts. Doramectin (DOR), a third-generation derivative of avermectins (AVMs), is renowned for its low toxicity and high efficiency. However, no research has hitherto focused on the anti-cholangiocarcinoma effects of these drugs.

To determine the compatibility of two new biocontrol fungi with common chemical pesticides, this study examined the effects of three insecticides, namely, avermectin, imidacloprid, and acetamiprid, and three fungicides, namely, chlorogenonil, boscalid, and kasugamycin, on the mycelial growth and spore germination of strains IF-1106 and IJ-tg19. The insecticidal effects of mixed insecticides or fungicides with good compatibility with IJ-tg19 against were tested. The results showed that the six chemical pesticides exerted different degrees of inhibition on the mycelial growth of both strains, with an obvious dose-dependent effect.

This study analyzed the residue depletion kinetics of ivermectin (IVM) in Nelore and crossbred (Nelore x Angus) cattle aiming to compare the profiles between the breeds and evaluate the residue levels at the injection site. IVM 1%, at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg, was administered the subcutaneous route, and tissue samples were collected on different days post administration for analysis by LC-MS/MS.

Extensive use of avermectin (AVM) in agriculture can seriously contaminate fish in aquaculture. Ferulic acid (FA) is a strong antioxidant sourced from plants and is widely applied in food and medicine, but its protective function on the immunological damage caused by AVM is still lacking. In this study, carp were chronically exposed to (1/10 96 hr LC) AVM for 30 day(s), with a dietary supplement of FA (400 mg/kg) to assess its effects on carp spleen.
