Objective: to describe congenital anomalies (CA) among live births of mothers resident in Tangará da Serra, MT, Brazil, during the period 2006-2016.

Methods: this was a descriptive study, using Brazilian Live Birth Information System (SINASC) data.

Results: out of 15,689 births, 77 were registered with CA (prevalence of 4.9/1,000); there was an 80.7% increase of recorded CA in 2016, accounting for 10.3/1,000 live births, including five cases of microcephaly; CA prevalence was higher among children born to women aged over 35 years (prevalence ratio [PR] =1.91; confidence interval [95%CI] 1.01;3.60), preterm (PR=2.22; 95%CI 1.26;3.92) and low birth weight infants (PR=3.21; 95%CI 1.86;5.54).

Conclusion: low CA prevalence was found, possibly related to under-recording at birth; the increase observed in 2016 may be related to the Zika epidemic causing microcephaly, as well as greater attention by health professionals in relation to CA during this public health emergency.

Legal framework and IVF outcomes: a comparative analysis of fresh and frozen embryo transfers in Switzerland.

Reprod Biomed Online

Division of Gynaecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine, University Women´s Hospital, Bern, Switzerland.

Research Question: To what extent do legislative measures impact standard reproductive outcome parameters?

Design: Retrospective cohort study using data from the Swiss national IVF registry analysing the outcomes of 13,908 women undergoing embryo transfers resulting from their first lifetime oocyte retrieval before (2014-2016) or after (2020-2022) revision of the legislation, allowing extended culture for 12 zygotes. Live birth rates (LBR) and cumulative LBR (cLBR) were compared in fresh and frozen embryo transfer strategies in both periods. Adjusted multivariable mixed model analyses were performed to determine OR and incidence rate ratios (IRR).

A Splice Site Variant in SENP7 Results in a Severe Form of Arthrogryposis.

Clin Genet

January 2025

Division of Genetics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a heterogeneous disorder associated with 1/3000 to 1/5000 live births. We report a consanguineous family with multiple affected members with AMC and identified a recessive mutation in the highly conserved splice donor site, resulting in the mis-splicing of the affected exons. SENP7 is a deSUMOylase that is critical for sarcomere assembly and skeletal muscle contraction by regulating the transcriptional program in the skeletal muscle.

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends an interval of at least 24 months from the date of a live birth to the conception of the next pregnancy in order to reduce the risk of adverse maternal, perinatal, and infant outcomes. There is limited data about the implementation of this recommendation and its contributing factors in low-land ecologies in Oromia, which is the biggest regional state in Ethiopia.

Objective: To assess the inter-pregnancy interval and determine associated factors among parous women in selected low-land districts of Arsi and East Shoa Zone.
