Understanding and revealing the connection between defects and dopant for improving electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) efficiency remain a constant challenge. In this work, the in situ Mn-doped MnZnInS supertetrahedral chalcogenide semiconductor nanoclusters (NCs) with an ECL efficiency as high as 27.1% was obtained, the corresponding ECL behaviors were investigated, and the vital role of more anti-site defects (ADs) introduced in situ on the ECL emission was elucidated. The ADs can not only give rise to the ECL emission peak at 494 nm but also assist transfer of electrons to induce and enhance the ECL emission at 627 nm from doped Mn in the NCs. Furthermore, based on the fact that dissolved oxygen can enhance the ECL intensity, a highly sensitive ECL sensor for the determination of dissolved oxygen was developed. This insight into the fundamental interactions between Mn dopants and defects in NC host may open new opportunities for the design of novel ECL materials to promote their application potential in electrochemical analysis and imaging.

Rapid, effective, and cost-effective methods for large-scale screening of pesticide residues in the environment and agricultural products are important for assessing potential environmental risks and safeguarding human health. Here, we constructed a novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) electrochemical aptamer (Apt) sensor based on red-emissive sulfur quantum dots (SQDs), which aimed at the rapid screening and quantitative detection of malathion. SQDs were prepared using a two-step oxidation method with good electrochemiluminescence (ECL) optical properties.

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence from Ruthenium-Tagged Immune Complex at Flexible Chains for Sensitive Analysis of Glutamate Decarboxylase Antibody.

Biosensors (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210092, China.

Herein, a sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor is designed by immobilizing ruthenium-tagged immune complexes at flexible poly-ethylene-glycol (PEG) chains on the electrode surface, which offers more freedom for the collision of the ruthenium complex at the electrode during the initial ECL reaction. The electrochemical characterizations confirm the loose structure of the assembled layer with the immune complex, providing an increase in the current and the resultant enhanced ECL emissions. Comparing the sensors with the rigid structure, a 34-fold increase in the maximal ECL emission is recorded when PEG3400 is used as a linker.

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Luminescence Analysis and Molecular Sensing (Southwest University), Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southwest University, Chongqing 400715, PR China.

The near-infrared electrochemiluminescence (NIR-ECL) technique has received special attention in cell imaging and biomedical analysis due to its deep tissue penetration, low background interference, and high sensitivity. Although cyanine-based dyes are promising NIR-ECL luminophores, limited ECL efficiency and the need for exogenous coreactants have prevented their widespread application. In this work, poly[9,9-bis(3'-(-dimethylamino)propyl)-2,7-fluorene]--2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (PFN) was innovatively developed to significantly invigorate the NIR-ECL performance of heptamethine cyanine dye IR 783 by the resonance energy transfer (RET) strategy.

Searching for new alternative to tripropylamine (TPrA) with low toxicity and high chemical stability for the tris(4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium (II) (Ru(dcbpy)) based coreactant electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system is essential for widespread analytical applications. Here, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) have been discovered to significantly amplify the ECL emission and increase the ECL efficiency of Ru(dcbpy) for the first time. However, the mechanism by which NGQDs act as coreactants is not well comprehended.

Reliable detection of Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies is crucial for diagnosing Neuromyelitis Optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). However, cell-based assays, the most reliable approach, are limited by inadequate instruments. This study reports the use of silver metal-organic gels (Ag-MOGs) as coreactants in a single-electrode electrochemical system (SEES)-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor for multiplex detection of AQP4 antibodies.
