CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were integrated with polyethyleneimine-coated carbon dots (PEI-CDs) to form a dually emitting probe for heparin. The red fluorescence of the CdTe QDs is quenched by the PEI-CDs due to electrostatic interactions. In the presence of heparin, the blue fluorescence of PEI-CDs remains unaffected, while its quenching effect on the fluorescence of CdTe QDs is strongly reduced. A ratiometric fluorometric assay was worked out. The ratio of the fluorescences at 595 and 436 nm serves as the analytical signal. Response is linear in the concentration range of 50-600 ng·mL (0.1-1.2 U·mL) of heparin. The limit of detection is 20 ng·mL (0.04 U·mL). This makes the method a valuable tool for heparin monitoring during postoperative and long-term care. This assay is relatively free from the interference by other analogues which commonly co-exist with heparin in samples, and it is more robust than single-wavelength based assays. Graphical abstract In the presence of heparin, the fluorescence of polyethyleneimine-coated carbon dots (PEI-CDs) at 436 nm remains unaffected, while its quenching effect on the fluorescence of CdTe at 595 nm is strongly reduced.

To advance cervical cancer diagnostics, we propose a state-of-the-art label-free electrochemical immunosensor designed for the simultaneous detection of multiple biomarker proteins (p16, p53, and Ki67). This immunosensor is constructed using a polyethyleneimine-coated gold nanoparticles/2D tungsten disulfide/graphene oxide (PEI-AuNPs/2D WS/GO) composite-modified three-screen-printed carbon electrode (3SPCE) array. The 2D WS/GO hybrid provides a large specific surface area for supporting well-dispersed PEI-AuNPs and adsorbed redox-active species, enhancing overall performance.

In this work, we report, for the first time, the construction of a label-free electrochemical immunosensor for highly sensitive detection of a new lung cancer biomarker, GM2 activator protein (GM2AP). A polyethyleneimine-coated gold nanoparticle (PEI-AuNP) and phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) modified electrode is developed as a novel redox platform for GM2AP detection. A PEI-AuNP film-modified screen-printed carbon electrode, as a signal amplifier support, was successfully fabricated for the adsorption of PMA redox molecules and is used for signal amplification.

A label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on the ionic liquid crystal (E)-1-decyl-4-[(4-decyloxyphenyl)diazenyl]pyridinium bromide (Br-Py) coated on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the quantitative detection of myoglobin (Mb), a cardiac marker for acute myocardial infarction, is reported herein for the first time. The monoclonal anti-myoglobin antibody (ab-Mb) was covalently immobilized using glyoxal on a film of polyethyleneimine-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNP-PEI). The proposed method for Mb detection is based on voltammetric suppression of the Br-Py signal when the immunosensor was incubated with Mb antigen.

Earlier work has shown increased hepatocellular free Ca2+ levels in rats receiving a single subtoxic dose of CCl4 after dietary pretreatment with nontoxic (10 ppm, 15 days) levels of chlordecone (CD), indicating a significant perturbation of Ca2+ homeostasis in the interactive toxicity of CD + CCl4 combination treatment. In the present study, the mitochondrial and microsomal ability to sequester Ca2+ as well as plasma membrane translocase activity was investigated, since it is known that cells maintain normal Ca2+ homeostasis by these mechanisms. Hepatic plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase (high and low affinity components) as well as 45Ca uptake by mitochondria and microsomes was measured using a range of calcium concentrations in Ca(2+)-EGTA-buffered medium at different time points after a single ip administration of CCl4 (100 microliters/kg).
