Water quality monitoring involves a complex set of steps and a variety of approaches. Its goals include understanding of aquatic habitats, informing management and facilitating decision making, and educating citizens. Environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs) are increasingly engaged in water quality monitoring and act as environmental watchdogs and stewards of water resources.

This article addresses several issues pertinent to health systems governance for health equity. It argues the importance of health systems using measures of positive health (well-being), discriminating in favour of historically less advantaged groups and weighing the costs of health care against investments in the social determinants of health. It cautions that the concept of governance could weaken the role of government, with disequalizing effects, while emphasizing the importance of two elements of good governance (transparency and participation) in health systems decision-making.

Modern defense services depend on a policy of the vigorous promotion of research to ensure that they retain an advantage in any future operational context. Research involving personnel within the armed forces, however, has certain constraints with respect to contemporary, best-practice medical ethics. Service members are one example of a class of "captive subjects" who require special protection in the context of medical research.
