: To examine the potential impact of the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks on asthma-related emergency department visits (AREDV) in the New York City borough of the Bronx. We obtained daily nitrogen dioxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO) and ozone (O) values from the National Climatic Data Center's collection station in the Bronx from 1999 and 2002, a year before and after the WTC attacks. We compared daily AREDV and pollutant levels between 1999 and 2002 using the Wilcoxon signed rank sum test. We considered each season separately due to seasonal variations of AREDV and pollutants. We then used multiple linear regression models to assess the relationships between the changes in AREDV and the changes in pollutants from 1999 to 2002 in each season. : There were statistically significant increases from 1999 to 2002 in the daily NO in the summer. Significant increases for daily SO and O values from 1999 to 2002 occurred in all seasons. Significant increases occurred in daily AREDV values in the spring and fall. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that increases in the daily O values were significantly associated with increases in AREDV from 1999 to 2002 in the summer season. : We observed a possible association between the WTC attacks and significant increases in O and SO for all seasons, and NO for the summer. AREDV significantly increased following the WTC attacks. Increases in daily O values were significantly associated with increases in AREDV in the summer season.

Serum cystatin C is a well-established marker of renal function and a valuable predictor of health risks and mortality. DNA methylation-predicted cystatin C (DNAmCystatinC), an advanced epigenetic biomarker, serves as a proxy for serum cystatin C levels. However, the relationships between serum cystatin C, DNAmCystatinC, renal function, and mortality outcomes have not been previously examined.

Background: The relationship between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) and telomere length (TL) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate their association in a nationally representative US population.
Methods: Data from 6,342 adults aged ≥20 were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002.
Background: One-carbon metabolism (OCM), a biochemical pathway dependent on micronutrients including folate and vitamin B12, plays an essential role in aging-related physiological processes. DNA methylation-based aging biomarkers may be influenced by OCM.
Objective: This study investigated associations of OCM-related biomarkers with epigenetic aging biomarkers in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Introduction: We intended to compare the predictive value for all-cause and cardiovascular deaths between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) derived from the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) cystatin C-based formula, the EKFC creatinine-based formula, and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) cystatin C- or creatinine-based formulas.
Methods: Overall, 4,132 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1999 and 2002 were included, and death information was obtained through the National Death Index. To compare predictive accuracy between EKFC eGFRcys (EKFC cystatin C-based formula), CKD-EPI eGFRcys (CKD-EPI cystatin C-based formula), EKFC eGFRcr (EKFC creatinine-based formula), and CKD-EPI eGFRcr (CKD-EPI creatinine-based formula), we conducted time-dependent receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves and reclassification analysis.

Introduction: Telomeres are nucleotide sequences found at the end of chromosomes, and their shortening is associated with chronological and biological ageing, oxidative stress and malnutrition. Shorter telomeres have been shown to be associated with periodontitis. Dietary nutrients are also influential factors in the aetiology and progression of periodontitis and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
