A Critical Review of an Environmental Risk Substance Induced by Aging Microplastics: Insights into Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Low-carbon Green Agriculture in Northwestern China, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, College of Natural Resources and Environment, Northwest A & F University, Yangling 712100, China.

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging contaminants category, can undergo complex aging in a variety of environmental matrices in which the chemical bonds of polymer molecules can be broken to form free radicals. While the existence of free radicals in aged plastics has been known for over half a century, only recently has significant research on a new type of environmentally risky substance, namely environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), present in aged MPs and their environmental effects, been started, but it is still in its infancy. To address these issues, this work examines EPFR generation on MPs and their environmental effect by reviewing publications from 2012 to 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgical excision is the main treatment for presacral cysts, but it's challenging due to nearby blood vessels and nerves, which can lead to complications and recurrence if done incorrectly.
  • The Chinese Expert Consensus on the Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Presacral Cysts (2024 edition) was developed by a team of specialists to address these challenges and improve patient outcomes.
  • Key updates in the 2024 consensus include new classifications for cyst anatomy, a focus on protecting sacral nerves during surgery, and clearer surgical approaches for different types of cysts.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICCA) with hepatic hilus involvement is a more aggressive type of cholangiocarcinoma with worse outcomes. Surgical resection with negative margins is the only effective treatment for ICCA. Neoadjuvant therapy is considered to improve the possibility of surgery for patients; however, laparoscopic radical resection after neoadjuvant therapy for ICCA with hepatic hilus involvement remains at the exploratory stage due to technical challenges.

ENPP2/Autotaxin: The potential drug target for alcoholic liver disease identified through Mendelian randomization analysis.

Liver Int

July 2024

Division of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, Hubei, China.

Background And Aims: At present, there is still a lack of radical drug targets for intervention in alcoholic liver disease (ALD), and drug discovery through randomized controlled trials is a lengthy, risky, and expensive undertaking, so we aimed to identify effective drug targets based on human genetics.

Methods: We used Mendelian randomization (MR) and Bayesian colocalization analysis to investigate 2639 genes encoding druggable proteins and examined the causal effects on ALD (PMID 34737426: 456348 European with 451 cases and 455 897 controls). In addition, we conducted the mediation analysis to explore the potential mechanism using the genome-wide association study (GWAS) data of blood biomarkers as mediators.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to present our initial experience and prove the feasibility of total intracorporeal laparoscopic ileal ureter replacement (TILIUR) in a single position for ureteral stricture based on membrane anatomy.

Materials And Methods: Between January 2021 and April 2023, six patients underwent TILIUR in a single position for ureteral strictures based on membrane anatomy. All patients with a past medical history underwent radical hysterectomy with bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection as well as extensive ureteral stricture due to radiotherapy.
