Purpose: Our study aimed to develop accelerated microscopic diffusional kurtosis imaging (μDKI) and preliminarily evaluated it in a rodent model of chronic epilepsy.

Methods: We investigated two μDKI acceleration schemes of reduced sampling density and angular range in a phantom and wild-type rats, and further tested μDKI method in pilocarpine-induced epilepsy rats using a 4.7 Tesla MRI. Single slice average μD and μK maps were derived, and Nissl staining was obtained.

Results: The kurtosis maps from two accelerated μDKI sampling schemes (sampling density and range) are very similar to that using fully sampled data (SSIM > 0.95). For the epileptic models, μDKI showed noticeably different contrast from those obtained with conventional DKI. Specifically, the average μK was significantly less than that of the average of K (0.15 ± 0.01 vs. 0.47 ± 0.02) in the ventricle.

Conclusions: Our study demonstrated the feasibility of accelerated in vivo μDKI. Our work revealed that μDKI provides complementary information to conventional DKI method, suggesting that advanced DKI sequences are promising to elucidate tissue microstructure in neurological diseases.

Background: Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that causes neurodegeneration and is linked with insulin resistance at molecular, clinical, and demographic levels. Defective insulin signaling promotes Aβ aggregation and accelerates Aβ formation in the brain leading to Type III diabetes.

Objective: The objective of this research project is to demonstrate a linkage if any between the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and insulin resistance.

Background: Vascular endothelial cell-derived exosomes are thought to mediate disease progression by regulating macrophage polarization. However, its mechanism in diabetes mellitus (DM)-related atherosclerosis (AS) progress is unclear.

Methods: High-glucose (HG) and oxLDL were used to induce human cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (HCMECs) to mimic DM-related AS model.

A central paradigm of nonequilibrium physics concerns the dynamics of heterogeneity and disorder, impacting processes ranging from the behavior of glasses to the emergent functionality of active matter. Understanding these complex mesoscopic systems requires probing the microscopic trajectories associated with irreversible processes, the role of fluctuations and entropy growth, and the timescales on which nonequilibrium responses are ultimately maintained. Approaches that illuminate these processes in model systems may enable a more general understanding of other heterogeneous nonequilibrium phenomena, and potentially define ultimate speed and energy cost limits for information processing technologies.

Unveiling the key influencing factors towards electrode/electrolyte interface control is a long-standing challenge for a better understanding of microscopic electrode kinetics, which is indispensable to building up guiding principles for designer electrocatalysts with desirable functionality. Herein, we exemplify the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) via water molecule oxidation with the iridium dioxide electrocatalyst and uncovered the significant mismatching effect of pH between local electrode surface and bulk electrolyte: the intrinsic OER activity under acidic or near-neutral condition was deciphered to be identical by adjusting this pH mismatching. This result indicates that the local pH effect at the electrified solid-liquid interface plays the main role in the "fake" OER performance.

Promoting angiogenesis, alleviating oxidative stress injury and inflammation response are crucial for bone healing. Herein, the deferoxamine (DFO)-loaded gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel coating (GelMA-DFO) was constructed on the 3D-printed poly(Glycolide-Co-Caprolactone)-hydroxyapatite (PGCL-HAP) scaffold. After the hydrogel coating was established, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and water contact angle measurement were employed to evaluate the characteristic and the biological properties were assessed.
