Modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysts with chiral reagents was evaluated by the hydrogenation of aromatic ketones. The strong adsorption of chiral mandelic acid (R)-MA on TiO2 was confirmed by comparing the inhibition effect IR values. The enantioselectivities were affected by not only the chiral reagents but also the TiO2 crystalline samples, suggesting that the interaction between aromatic ketones and MA on TiO2 should depend on the surface structure and morphology of TiO2 particles.

Ni(II)-hydrazineylpyridine (Ni(II)-PyH)-catalyzed regioselective synthesis of α-benzyl substituted β-hydroxy ketones from α,β-unsaturated ketones and alcohols is reported a Fenton free-radical reaction. This protocol enables facile access to desired products in good to excellent yields in 12 h using toluene solvent at room temperature to 100 °C. The structural analysis of the products was confirmed by H, C-NMR, GC-MS, and HRMS data.

Rainy weather restricts the formation of high-quality Wuyi rock tea (WRT). Herein, an optimized withering process for rain-soaked leaves was developed using response surface methodology. Results showed that increasing the withering temperature, relative humidity, and withering time from 25 °C to 40 °C, 80 % to 97 %, and 3 to 6 h, respectively, effectively improved the sensory qualities of the optimized primary WRT (WRTO) prepared from rain-soaked leaves compared with those before optimization.

A potential link has been reported between skin exposure to aromatic amines, such as ortho-toluidine (OT) and 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (MOCA), and bladder cancer cases observed in Japanese chemical factories. To evaluate this association, we explored the permeability of OT and MOCA through pig skin and investigated the subsequent changes in plasma and urine concentrations in rats following percutaneous exposure. Employing Yucatan micropig skin, we first executed a permeability test by affixing the skin to a diffusion cell and applying 14C-labeled OT or MOCA.

Benzylic C-H Oxidation: Recent Advances and Applications in Heterocyclic Synthesis.

Molecules

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Physics, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg 3209, South Africa.

Benzylic C-H oxidation to form carbonyl compounds, such as ketones, is a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis as it allows for the preparation of versatile intermediates. In this review, we highlight the synthesis of aromatic ketones via catalytic, electrochemical, and photochemical oxidation of alkylarenes using different catalysts and oxidants in the past 5 years. Additionally, we also discuss the synthesis of heterocyclic molecules using benzylic C-H oxidation as a key step.

Keto reductases are crucial NAD(P)H-dependent enzymes used for the enantioselective synthesis of alcohols from prochiral ketones. Typically, the NADPH cofactor is regenerated through a second enzyme and/or substrate. However, photocatalytic cofactor regeneration using water as a sacrificial electron and hydrogen donor presents a promising alternative, albeit a challenging one.
