The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of post artificial insemination (AI) treatment with intravaginal progesterone device (P4 device) on conception rate, synchronization of returning estrus and plasma P4 concentration in Japanese Black cows. Nineteen cows were treated with DIB (1.0 g P4) from Day 12 to 19 (Day 0=day of the first AI), 27 cows were treated with a CIDR (1.9 g P4) from Day 12 to 19, and 33 cows were not treated after the first AI (control). Estrous behavior was daily examined between Day 20 and 25, and cows returning to estrus were inseminated (the second AI). On Day 19, plasma P4 concentration was not different among DIB, CIDR and control groups. There was no significant difference in conception rate after the first AI among three groups (DIB: 63.2%, CIDR: 66.7% and control: 72.7%). In non-pregnant cows, there was no significant difference in the proportion of cows showed returning estrus between Day 20 and 25 (DIB: 57.1%, CIDR: 22.2% and control: 44.4%), and day of returning estrus was not synchronized. The overall conception rate after the first and second AI was not different among the groups. In conclusion, post-AI treatment with intravaginal devices containing 1.0 and 1.9 g P4 from Day 12 to 19 neither increased plasma P4 concentration nor improved fertility and synchronization of the returning estrus in Japanese Black cows.

The objective of this study was to compare the fertility of diestrous mares with a follicle ≥ 30 mm in diameter treated with prostaglandin F2α (PGF) (PGF group) or left untreated for 7 days (SP group). Standardbred mares (n = 46) were assigned randomly to the SP (n = 23) and PGF groups (n = 23) when they were identified with a corpus luteum (CL) of unknown age and a follicle ≥ 30 mm in diameter (Day 0). The most frequent outcome in the PGF group was estrus and ovulation of the dominant follicle (74 %), while the outcomes of the SP mares 7 days after Day 0 were more variable: estrus and follicle regression (30 %), diestrous ovulation (22 %) and diestrus along with follicle regression (26 %) of the dominant follicles.

The study investigates the economics of sensor-assisted dairy health management and indicates a certain economic potential in the use of a commercial rumen bolus capable of tracking activity and core body temperature. The economic evaluation was performed applying a stochastic model with the net return (NR) of investment of the sensor system as the target variable. The calculated NR considers the gross margin (GM) for both sensor-assisted and visual health monitoring, time savings through sensor-assisted monitoring, additional time spent addressing false positive messages from the sensor system, labor costs, and all costs associated with the investment in the sensor system.

Background: The herd age structure, i.e., distribution of sows within a farm based on their parity number, and its management are essential to optimizing farm reproductive efficiency.

Targeted reproductive management (TRM), employing automated monitoring devices (AMD), is as an alternative to the blanket adoption of ovulation synchronization protocols (OvSP) for first postpartum artificial insemination (AI) and a means of reducing the use of OvSP for re-AI of non-pregnant cows. We hypothesized that a TRM that relies heavily on AI of cows on AMD-detected estrus increases improves reproductive performance and economic return. Early-postpartum estrus characteristics of multiparous (n = 941) cows were evaluated at 40 and 41 DIM (Herds 1and 2, respectively) and early-postpartum estrus characteristics of primiparous (n = 539) cows were evaluated at 54 and 55 DIM (Herds 1 and 2, respectively).

This study investigated the effects of nutrient manipulation during the peripartum and suckling periods on the productivity of Hanwoo cows and their offspring. A total of 183 pregnant cows and their 180 offspring were randomly assigned to either a control group, fed a formula feed with 13.5% crude protein (CP) and 70.
