Babesiosis is a protozoan disease acquired by the bite of different species of ticks. More than 100 spp. infect wild and domestic animals worldwide, but only a few have been documented to infect humans.

In 2022 as in 1884, the clinical presentation of uncomplicated malaria is unspecific: fever of variable intensity, continuous or rhythmic, chills, flu syndrome, headache, respiratory and digestive disorders. At any time, it can evolve into a severe form (ex-pernicious attack or cerebral malaria) or even lethal. By reading again Alphonse Laveran's book on malarial fevers, we realized to what extent the observations made at that time allowed for a methodical and orderly description of the clinical forms of malaria, very close to what we can still observe today.

The origin of quinine from Peru remains a mystery because of the lack of primary data-in particular, those produced by the Jesuits working in Peru. The discovery of cinchona bark and its use in malaria treatment must have come from the Jesuits, who worked with the native Andeans, the Quichuan people, and learned how the bark of the cinchona tree could be used for chills. Unknown is whether the Andean people used it for fever that may have been the result of malaria.

A 74-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus presented with four days of fever, chills, dyspnea on exertion, and dark brown urine.
