  • * These cells showed a slow doubling time of 114.34 hours and have a diploid chromosome count of 48, indicating they are not true stem cells due to the absence of some pluripotency genes despite expressing POU5f1 and NANOG.
  • * When transfected with a specific plasmid, OFEC-17FEN cells displayed strong green fluorescence, highlighting their potential for research and biotechnological applications.

Article Abstract

A new embryonic cell line (OFEC-17FEN) derived from olive flounder was developed. OFEC-17FEN cells were subcultured for <30 passages over ~200 days. OFEC-17FEN cells had a doubling time of 114.34 h and modal diploid chromosome number was 48. The pluripotency genes POU5f1 and NANOG were expressed in OFEC-17FEN cells. However, the lack of several pluripotency-related genes expression indicates that OFEC-17FEN cells are not stem cells. OFEC-17FEN cells transfected with plasmid pEGFP-c1 exhibited a strong green fluorescent signal at 48 h after transfection. Accordingly, OFEC-17FEN cells may be useful for both basic research and biotechnological application.

Emaciation disease has directly affected the production of olive flounder-a major aquaculture species in Korea-since the 2000s. Various myxosporeans have been reported as its causative agents. In this study, we investigated the recent resurgence of emaciation on Jeju Island, considering not only myxosporean infections but also potential environmental factors.

Exosomes are released from multiple cell types as part of their normal physiology as well as during acquired abnormalities. In this study, we investigated the effect of pathogenic Edwardsiella piscicida infection on olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) exosomes at morphometric, physicochemical, and molecular levels. Unique cup-shaped exosomes were isolated from the plasma of non-infected (PBS-Exo) and E.

Genome-wide analysis of quorum sensing regulon in marine fish pathogen Vibrio scophthalmi.

Sci Rep

Department of Food Science and Biotechnology, College of Engineering, Ewha Womans University, Seoul, 03760, South Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The opportunistic fish pathogen Vibrio scophthalmi significantly harms olive flounder and turbot, leading to major economic losses in seafood production in Far East Asia.
  • This study focuses on the role of LuxR, a quorum sensing master regulator, revealing that it enhances poly-hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis while inhibiting biofilm formation in V. scophthalmi.
  • The research suggests that targeting LuxR could be an effective strategy to mitigate the pathogen's harmful effects, thus improving seafood production by interfering with its various physiological functions.
