Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) placed on the seafloor surface are utilized for measuring the ocean bottom seismic waves. The vibration of OBS excited by underwater noise on its surface may interfere with its measured results of seismic waves. In this particular study, an OBS was placed on the seabed, while ray acoustic theory was used to deduce the sound field distribution around the OBS. Then using this information, the analytical expression for the OBS vibration velocity was obtained in order to find various factors affecting its amplitude. The finite element computing software COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL) was used to obtain the vibration response model of the OBS which was exposed to underwater noise. The vibration velocity for the OBS calculated by COMSOL agreed with the theoretical result. Moreover, the vibration velocity of OBS with different densities, shapes, and characters were investigated as well. An OBS with hemispherical shape, consistent average density as that of the seafloor, and a physical structure of double tank has displayed minimum amplitude of vibration velocity. The proposed COMSOL model predicted the impact of underwater noise while detecting the ocean bottom seismic waves with the OBS. In addition, it provides significant help for the design and optimization of an appropriate OBS.

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) dominates the transfer of heat, salt, and tracers around the Southern Ocean (SO), driving the upwelling of carbon-rich deep waters around Antarctica. Paleoclimate reconstructions reveal marked variability in SO circulation; however, few records exist coupling quantitative reconstructions of ACC flow with tracers of SO upwelling spanning multiple Pleistocene glacial cycles. Here, we reconstruct near-bottom flow speed variability in the SO south of Africa, revealing systematic glacial-interglacial variations in the strength and/or proximity of ACC jets.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) caused by multiple phenomena with days to months duration are increasingly common disturbances in ocean ecosystems. We investigated the impacts of MHWs on pelagic communities using spatially resolved time-series of multiple trophic levels from the Southern California Current Ecosystem. Indices of phytoplankton biomass mostly declined during MHWs because of reduced nutrient supply (excepting Prochlorococcus) and were generally more sensitive to marine heatwave intensity than duration.

Although air sinuses are prevalent in odontocetes and are an integral component of their sound reception system, the acoustic function of these air-filled structures remains largely unknown. To address this, we developed a numerical model using computed tomography data from a Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) to investigate the role of the air sinuses in sound reception. By comparing sound reception characteristics between model cases with and without the air sinuses, we found that the air sinuses improved sound reception directivity.

Deep sea microbial communities play a significant role in global biogeochemical processes. However, the depth-wise metabolic potential of microbial communities in hydrothermally influenced Central Indian Ridge (CIR) and Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) remains elusive. In this study, a comprehensive functional microarray-based approach was used to understand factors influencing the metabolic potential of microbial communities and depth-driven differences in microbial functional gene composition in CIR and SWIR.

To understand the habitat distribution characteristics of in summer in Jiangsu coastal waters, we analyzed the relationship between resource density and habitat environment of by using a two-stage generalized additive model based on the survey data of fishery resources in August 2022, combined with the data of bottom water temperature, bottom salinity, depth, chlorophyll-a and prey species. The results showed that the average resource density of in summer was 15.03 kg·km, which mainly distributed in the outer sea area of Lusi Fishing Ground and the middle sea area of Haizhou Bay Fishing Ground.
