Background: The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Australia is currently poorly characterized. The risk factor profile for PAD is changing with the population ageing, diabetes increasing and smoking rates declining. The management of PAD is also evolving, with advances in medical management and endovascular technique. The trends in PAD prevalence and surgical management have implications for preventative medicine, the Australian health system and vascular surgery. We report and analyse trends in PAD surgical intervention performed between 2001 and 2015.

Methods: Data was extracted from the National Hospital Morbidity Database procedural item code records. Procedural numbers of endovascular lower extremity revascularization (LER); open LER; minor and major lower extremity amputations (LEA) between 2001 and 2015 in adults ≥45 years were included. Results were population-adjusted and age-stratified using census information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to analyse changes in intervention rates. Linear regression analyses were performed to calculate the average annual change in procedures per capita (100 000).

Results: From 2001 and 2015, per capita (100 000 population) volume of endovascular LER increased 89%, open LER decreased 70%, major LEA decreased 65% and minor LEA increased 14%. The most remarkable changes were in the ≥85-year-old cohort, with endovascular procedures per capita increasing 188%; coinciding with both open LER and major LEA decreasing by 73% between 2001 and 2015.

Conclusions: Australian hospital data between 2001 and 2015 shows that endovascular LER interventions and minor LEA have significantly increased per capita in Australians ≥45 years. In contrast, both open LER and major LEA rates have significantly decreased in the same cohort.

Article Synopsis
  • Selpercatinib is a RET inhibitor used to treat specific types of cancers, and a long-term safety analysis showed that most side effects can be managed with dose changes.
  • The study included 837 patients with RET fusion-positive tumors, who were followed for an average of 45.4 months, revealing high rates of grade ≥3 adverse effects, primarily hypertension and elevated liver enzymes.
  • Despite significant side effects, most patients were able to continue treatment, indicating that long-term use of selpercatinib is possible with appropriate management of adverse events.

Open and endovascular treatment of the common femoral artery in a tertiary care center.

J Vasc Surg

February 2025

Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. Electronic address:

Objectives: Endovascular treatment of peripheral arterial disease involving the common femoral artery (CFA) remains controversial. This study compares the perioperative and long-term outcomes of open and endovascular lower extremity revascularization (LER) involving the CFA.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing LER for peripheral arterial disease in a tertiary care center was performed.

The Incidence and Impact of Cardiac Function Decline after Lower Extremity Revascularization.

Ann Vasc Surg

January 2025

Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Department of Surgery, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how declines in cardiac function affect major adverse limb events (MALE) in patients who undergo lower extremity revascularization (LER) due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD).
  • Out of 926 patients analyzed, 24% experienced a decline in cardiac function, which was linked to higher rates of diabetes and heart failure but not to the method of revascularization.
  • Despite increased mortality rates over three years for those with cardiac function decline, there was no significant difference in limb-related outcomes or reintervention rates compared to patients with stable cardiac function.

Later eating rhythm (LER) refers to later timing, greater energy intake (EI), and higher frequency of eating occasions (meal/snack) in the evening. The significance of LER in child health is becoming increasingly recognised. However, the lack of consensus regarding definitions of LER make it challenging to fully comprehend its role.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have the potential to improve education by personalizing learning. However, ChatGPT-generated content has been criticized for sometimes producing false, biased, and/or hallucinatory information. To evaluate AI's ability to return clear and accurate anatomy information, this study generated a custom interactive and intelligent chatbot (Anatbuddy) through an Open AI Application Programming Interface (API) that enables seamless AI-driven interactions within a secured cloud infrastructure.
