The ingredients of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) persist in water and conventional treatment plants are not able to remove them efficiently. Sonochemical treatment is insufficient to mineralize organics such as ibuprofen into CO and HO. TiO degrades ibuprofen (IBP) under UV light; however, it does not reach a high grade of conversion. Here, we investigated the mineralization of ibuprofen to CO by TiO UV-C photocatalysis. We replaced nano-sized P25 (the standard catalyst) with a micro-sized commercial sample of TiO to preclude the use of nanoparticles which are dangerous for human health and because typical filtration systems are expensive and inefficient. We deposited micro-TiO on glass Raschig rings to ensure an easy recovery and reuse of the photocatalyst and we studied its performance both with a batch and a continuous reactor. Micro-TiO mineralized 100% of IBP in 24 h. TiO-coated glass Raschig rings degraded 87% of IBP in 6 h of UV-C irradiation in a continuous reactor, with a mineralization of 25%. Electronspray ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS, positive mode) analyses identified 13 different byproducts and we hypothised a degradration pathway for IBP degradation.

Heterojunction formation between BiVO nanomaterials and benchmark semiconductor photocatalysts has been keenly pursued as a promising approach to improve charge transport and charge separation via interfacial electron transfer for the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of recalcitrant pharmaceutical pollutants. In this work, a heterostructured TiO/Mo-BiVO bilayer photoanode was fabricated by the deposition of a mesoporous TiO overlayer using the benchmark P25 titania catalyst on top of Mo-doped BiVO inverse opal films as the supporting layer, which intrinsically absorbs visible light below 490 nm, while offering improved charge transport. A porous P25/Mo-BiVO bilayer structure was produced from the densification of the inverse opal underlayer after post-thermal annealing, which was evaluated on photocurrent generation in aqueous electrolyte and the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of the refractory anti-inflammatory drug ibuprofen under back-side illumination by visible and UV-Vis light.

Batch heterogeneous catalytic ozonation experiments were performed using commercial and synthesized nanoparticles as catalysts in aqueous ozone. The transferred ozone dose (TOD) ranged from 0 to 150 μM, and nanoparticles were added in concentrations between 0 and 1.5 g L, with all experiments conducted at 20 °C and a total volume of 240 mL.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a potential threat to marine organisms. In vitro toxicity of MPs and other pollutants, such as pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), has been understudied. This study aimed to investigate the effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) with different particle sizes on two biomarkers: ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in tilapia liver homogenates.

Agarose/micrometer titanium dioxide (TiO) beads were essayed to test the photocatalytic capacity of two of the most widely prescribed drugs worldwide: paracetamol and ibuprofen. Although the initial tests demonstrated promising degradation rates for both drugs, the presence of turbidity, due to TiO leakage, during the photocatalytic essays induced to improve the stability of the photocatalytic composites. Among the different strategies adopted to strengthen such materials, crosslinking with citric acid and the use of alternative gelling agents: gellan, agargel™, and agar were chosen.

Developing high-performance and durable catalysts presents a significant challenge for oxidizing toxic inorganic and pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater. Recently, there has been a surge in the development of new heterogeneous catalysts for degrading pharmaceutical compounds, driven by advancements in electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts. In this study, a plasmonic Ag nanoparticles decorated CoFeO@TiO heteronanostructures have been successfully designed to fabricate a high-performing photoelectrode for the oxidation of pharmaceutical compounds.
