The effect of synthetic atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was examined on the in vivo and in vitro release of ACTH. Intravenous ANP (4 micrograms/kg body weight) administration did not affect the corticotropin releasing factor (CRF, 4 micrograms/kg body weight)-, arginine vasopressin (AVP, 2 micrograms/kg body weight)- and angiotensin II (A II, 4 micrograms/kg body weight)-induced ACTH release in unanesthetized freely moving rats. ANP did not inhibit the basal, CRF- and AVP-induced release of ACTH in pituitary cell cultures. ANP did not affect the CRF- and AVP-induced plasma corticosterone elevation, while it attenuated the AVP-induced corticosterone elevation. These results indicate that ANP does not affect the ACTH release at the pituitary level in vivo and in vitro.

Biotin (B) acts as an antioxidant, as it inhibits the effect of many free radicals that are naturally formed within the organism's body. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding different concentrations of biotin to the diet of broilers exposed to oxidative stress in improving productive and physiological performance. 180 unsexed Ross-308 one-day age chicks of broiler chickens were used, and they were reared together until 7 days.

Background: The identification of estrogen receptors alpha and beta and aromatase in the testis has highlighted the important role of estrogens in regulating spermatogenesis. There is a wealth of information on the deleterious effects of fetal and neonatal exposure of estrogens and xenoestrogens in the testis, including spermiation failure and germ cell apoptosis. However, very little is known about gene transcripts affected by exogenous estradiol exposure in the testis.

Background: The purpose of this prospective, randomized, blinded to observer study was to assess the analgesic effect and safety of intrathecal morphine (ITM) in post-operative pain control in children after heart surgery with a sternotomy incision.
Methods: Eighty children, 3-55 kg in body weight, undergoing elective cardiac surgery with opioid-based anaesthesia were randomly divided into two treatment groups to receive either 20 micrograms/kg ITM at induction of anaesthesia or control. To standardize the protocol for administration of post-operative rescue intravenous morphine boluses and infusion (20-60 micrograms/kg/h), the Cardiac Analgesic Assessment Scale (CAAS) was used.

The contribution of genetic factors to adult male reproductive system toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) was analyzed in three rat lines differentially resistant to TCDD acute lethality: line A, B, and C rats (selectively bred from TCDD-resistant Han/Wistar [Kuopio; H/W] and TCDD-sensitive Long-Evans [Turku/AB; L-E] rats). The resistance is linked to a mutated H/W-type aryl hydrocarbon receptor allele in line A and to an H/W-type unknown "B" allele in line B. Line C rats do not have resistance alleles.

Leptin is a hormone implicated in the regulation of the food intake and body weight, but also increasing number of evidence suggest that leptin participates in the regulation of inflammatory processes. The aim of our study was to examine the influence of exogenous leptin administration on the development and the course of acute ischemic pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis was induced by temporary limitation of pancreatic blood flow, followed by reperfusion.
