Based on previous and on new species records, the non-lumbricid earthworm fauna of the Balkans and Anatolia consists of ten species, belonging to four families: Acanthodrilidae, with Microscolex dubius (Fletcher, 1886) and Microscolex phosphoreus (Dugès, 1837), Criodrilidae, with Criodrilus lacuum Hoffmeister, 1845 and Criodrilus ochridensis Georgevitch, 1950, Megascolecidae, with Amynthas corticis (Kinberg, 1867), Amynthas gracilis (Kinberg, 1867), Amynthas morrisi (Beddard, 1892), Metaphire californica (Kinberg, 1867), and Pontodrilus litoralis (Grube, 1855), and Ocnerodrilidae, with Ocnerodrilus occidentalis Eisen, 1878. Four species are recorded on the both territories (C. lacuum, M. dubius, M. phosporeus, A. corticis). Four out of five megascolecid species are present in Turkey (A. corticis, A. gracilis, A. morrisi, M. californica) and only two (A. corticis, P. litoralis) in the Balkans. One of them, Amynthas morrisi, is new to the fauna of Turkey.

Urban green areas can have a high impact on soil fauna due the environmental changes caused by human activities. This work aimed to assess earthworm populations in urban sites in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Bioremediation technologies have demonstrated significant success on biological quality recovery of hydrocarbon contaminated soils, employing techniques among which composting and vermiremediation stand out. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of these processes to remediate diesel-contaminated soil, employing local organic materials and earthworms. The extremely difficult and challenging process is identifying pheretimoid species, genus Metaphire and Amynthas involving increased homoplasy in various morphological characteristics. The molecular identification, phylogenetic relationships, and evolutionary divergence time of earthworms belonging to the pheretimoid complex were investigated in this study using partial mitochondrial COI (cytochrome C oxidase subunit I) gene sequences ranging from 550-680 bp. Results revealed that 86 pheretimoid earthworms were morphologically different from a total of 342 mature worms.
