Given an increasing trend in slaughter and chilling for the sale of chickens in China, it is important to determine the marketable age of chickens for chilled sales. This study determined the effects of two marketable ages on the body measurements, carcass traits, and meat quality of yellow-feathered chickens. A total of 360 healthy one-day-old male Xueshan chickens were raised in six pens (straw-covered floor, numbered 1 to 6) and treated in the same manner (free access to food and water) until day 100.

The use of indicator species can simplify bird monitoring by reducing the level of specialized skills needed, which increases the potential pool of participants and reduces training costs and complexity. To facilitate monitoring in the humid forests of northeast Central America, we conducted point count surveys for birds across gradients of disturbance in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize, and analyzed the association of bird species with remotely sensed metrics of forest condition and anthropogenic disturbance using indicator species analysis. Twenty species exhibited significant associations with one or more of these metrics.

Polyacetylenes 1 and 2 were isolated from extracts of Japanese ivy (Hedera rhombea Bean) flower buds, with their chemical structures established on the basis of extensive 1D and 2D NMR and MS analyses. The absolute configurations of compounds 1 and 2 were determined by both chemical means, and by using the modified Mosher's method. Compound 1 is the first polyacetylene having an ester linkage between falcarindiol (3) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) moieties and 2 also had an unique substructure containing a conjugated diene adjacent to a hydroxy group.

To explore this discrepancy, we directly compared the antiandrogenic potency of these two compounds in vivo using the chicken cockscomb topical bioassay. In this assay, the growth of the androgen sensitive cockscomb of immature chicks after stimulation by various doses of androgen (dihydrotestosterone 5, 20, or 100 micrograms/day sc) is inhibited by antiandrogens in cream vehicle applied topically to the cockscomb itself.
