Oxidation-reduction midpoint potentials for the molybdenum center in assimilatory NADH:nitrate reductase isolated from spinach (Spinacia oleracea) have been determined at pH 7.0 in the presence of dye mediators using EPR spectroscopy to monitor formation of Mo(V). Values for the Mo(VI)/Mo(V) and Mo(V)/Mo(IV) couples were determined to be -8 and -42 mV, respectively.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidizing (anammox) bacteria have been proven weak-electroactive. However, the impact of exogenous anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on the anammox activity, although it usually plays essential roles in the life activities of many other electroactive microorganisms, is still unknown. Therefore, this study further explored the influences of AQDS on the anammox activity and the interaction mechanism with anammox bacteria, as well as the behaviors of NH, NO, and NO.

In Photosystem II electrons from water splitting pass through a primary quinone electron acceptor (Q) to the secondary plastoquinone (Q). The D2 protein forms the Q-binding site and the D1 protein forms the Q-binding site. A non-heme iron sits between Q and Q resulting in a quinone-Fe-acceptor complex that must be activated before assembly of the oxygen-evolving complex can occur.

Redox modulation is a common posttranslational modification to regulate protein activity. The targets of oxidizing agents are cysteine residues (Cys), which have to be exposed at the surface of the proteins and are characterized by an environment that favors redox modulation. This includes their protonation state and the neighboring amino acids.

CIGB-258, a 3 kDa peptide from heat shock protein 60, exhibits synergistic anti-inflammatory activity with apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) in reconstituted high-density lipoproteins (rHDLs) via stabilization of the rHDL structure. This study explored the interactions between CIGB-258 and apoA-I in the lipid-free state to assess their synergistic effects in the structural and functional enhancement of apoA-I and HDL. A co-treatment of lipid-free apoA-I and CIGB-258 inhibited the cupric ion-mediated oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and a lowering of oxidized species in the dose-responsive manner of CIGB-258.

ferredoxin:NADP oxidoreductase (FNR) is a thioredoxin reductase-type FNR whose redox properties and reactivity with nonphysiological electron acceptors have been scarcely characterized. On the basis of redox reactions with 3-acetylpyridine adenine dinucleotide phosphate, the two-electron reduction midpoint potential of the flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) cofactor was estimated to be -0.240 V.
