The effect of synthetic alpha-human atrial natriuretic polypeptide (alpha-hANP) on the in vivo and in vitro release of ACTH and corticosterone was examined. In the in vivo study ACTH and corticosterone responses to rapid 2-ml/rat hemorrhage were measured in sixteen conscious rats after alpha-hANP administration. The hemorrhage increased plasma ACTH and corticosterone concentrations in the control group of rats (p greater than 0.01). ANP inhibited hemorrhage-induced ACTH secretion (p less than 0.05), but the plasma corticosterone response was not affected. In the in vitro study a high concentration of ANP (1 microM) reduced basal corticosterone secretion from the isolated rat adrenal gland (p less than 0.05), but the response to ACTH (10 ng/ml) and dibutyryl cyclic AMP (0.5 mM, 5.0 mM) was not affected. Our data suggest that ANP inhibits hemorrhage-induced ACTH secretion from the anterior pituitary but inhibits corticosterone secretion from the adrenal gland very weakly.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) believes that kidney deficiency is the fundamental cause of chronic refractory asthma, accompanied by pathological changes such as airway remodeling and a reduction of endogenous glucocorticoid (GC) synthesis. The combination of Epimedium brevicornum Maxim (EB) and Ligustrum lucidum Ait (LL) is frequently used in TCM for kidney tonifying and the alleviation of asthma symptoms. This approach is based on Pei-Ben formula, a renowned treatment for asthma developed by the distinguished Shanghai Practitioner, Professor Huiguang Xu, over 30 years of clinical experience.

Objective: Depression and osteoporosis are usually concurrent health problems. This study aimed to explore the development of osteoporosis in depressive mice model and investigate the beneficial effects of the classical herbal formula Chaihu-Shugan-San (CHSG) on the brain and bone.

Methods: CHSG powder was prepared by spray-drying following extraction with water.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal) root or whole-plant extracts are used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and other nervous system disturbances.

Aim Of The Study: We evaluated the neuroprotective and antidepressant effects of ashwagandha root extract (ARE) on corticosterone-exposed HT-22 cells and unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS)-challenged mice.

There is growing evidence that organophosphate esters (OPEs) can act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals. However, only a few studies have assessed the effects of OPE exposure on one of the most important endocrine glands in the body, the adrenal gland. Our aim was to test the effects of a mixture of OPEs detected in Canadian house dust on adrenal function in Sprague Dawley rats.
